Dell Inspiron 1545 Review

Product Uses:
web design and development, watching web tv, listen to music, photo storage, word processing, keeping accounts, basic graphic design

Review:
I bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 because of it's good keyboard, it's great for typing. The machine is good, it had to have Vista Basic as I could not choose another OS. The machine is quick and responsive, but I added extra memory to achieve this. Sound is good through headphones, speakers can go quite loud. Display is nice and clear. All in all, I'm pleased with my purchase.

I wish I'd added a more powerful graphics card so I could use more than 2 monitors.

My Review and Recommendations

Product Uses:
streming hd video content, Gaming, browsing the web, word processing, watching dvds, powerpoint

Review:
My opinion of this product has changed over the last two months. When I had first purchased this computer, it was loaded with Windows Vista and Mcafee. The security software was the first thing I got rid of (via Control Panel). Unfortunately, I had to cope with Vista. The laptop would often heat up and freeze randomly. Back then, I would have given this laptop 2/5.
When I got Windows 7, it slightly improved performance and battery life. Furthermore, it made the machine run a little cooler. Two new problems did spring up however: I would sometimes get a Black screen on startup and the speakers made an annoying popping sound when used. Both problems were fixed using Windows Update and Dell Driver Downloads respectively. When using Dell update, use Internet Explorer as it gives you the option to download the driver updates without the annoying Dell Download Manager.
My video card is good for watching HD videos. It can lag, however, when you set the laptop battery mode to Power Saver in addition to causing the processor to make an annoying beeping noise. For gaming, it is mediocre. The new Nvidia G-210m 512mb option for this laptop will most likely fare better.
The 64-bit OS is nice as it can use 4Gb of RAM and up. However, not all are compatible. Firefox often freezes when I try to use it shortly after startup, hindering productivity. I recommend Opera if you want to browse the web immediately after startup.
My last complaint is geared towards the slot drive. While it looks nice and plays my films nicely, it would have been nicer if it was not so loud when the DVD is first inserted. It takes a good twenty minutes for the drive to die down while watching a film. The solution: turn up the volume and get a nice set of speakers, or even two. After all, it does have two headphone jacks.

Now for the rest of the hardware: the sound card sounds decent, and the dual headphone jacks are nice. Unlike a review I read from below, the laptop had TWO USB ports: one on the left and another on the right which doubles as an e-SATA port. The LED display is quite nice for watching videos. The Keyboard is phenomenal.

Beauty wise, this machine looks nice. It has received numerous compliments. It is also well built.
Overall, with all the updates and so on, I can now say that I really like this machine. If your needs match mine, you should be content with this computer. If you plan to buy this machine, I recommend the following:
1. Get the Nvidia 512mb graphics card(g-210m)
2. Uninstall Mcaffee
3. Find Updates
4. Speed up boot-times by going to Start-> type msconfig in the textbox, and under "Startup", uncheck any unnecessary programs
5. Update the Sound card driver if it is making the popping sound
6. When updating the Dell drivers, use IE as it gives you the option to not use Dell Download Manager
7. Give your new laptop PC a chance. It is utilizing a new MS OS which will improve with time.

M15x review after 6 weeks................

Product Uses:
Gaming, everyday web surfing, photo editing, 3d graphic design

Review:
First of all, the laptop arrived a week before the schedule date, which just made my day. When I first saw the box I was very impress with the packaging, by the time I got to the laptop I feels like I pay million for this, even down to the user guide is nice, not sure I'll ever wear the hat outside thou.

Now about the M15x, its the best computer I ever own, and I owned a few. This beat all the laptop/desktop I got before, preformance is excellent, my first game on this was Modern Warfare, and it is smooth graphic all the way with settings on high. When running Photoshop CS2, its nice that I can add a filter and it just change right the way. Also when it come to 3D rendering like on Truespace 7, the core cpu really works well. The FX is fun to play with and it's for sure a attention getter.

Here is what I found disappointing for such a well designed laptop. "Keypad" is worst than any laptop I ever use. The facial reconition is cool, but it only work about 50% of the time. Its kind of umbarrasing when showing off the cool new toy to your friends and only work half of the time.

With that said about the Keyboard/Facial Reconition, this is still the best laptop I ever owned, and will recommand to anyone that don't mind paying a little bit more for a well design and powerful system.

M17x - Fully Loaded for Speed and Size - Review

Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, portable pc functions, web browsing, gaming and killing time, desktop replacement

Review:
Of course there is a lot expected when one drops several thousand dollars on a system. It is expected that it will be delivered in great condition and the order complete. That support should not be needed for minor tweaks and that all resources are documented and easily interpreted.

So far, so good.

I have had my scares only to recover with my own solutions by studying, (not just reading) the information that is provided. It's all there. I have found two problems and gone on-line to identify with others that noted the same twitches. One is the confusion over the graphics modes. Long story short, you want to see the green crescent(s) logo in the notification bar group if you are to get performance graphics. If you power up without external power (battery mode) it will automatically cancel this option, (logo gone) and you will need to ask permission to turn it back on by toughing the tachometer icon touch switch. You will be warned that you need to provide full power to do so. A couple of reboots at most will teach you how this works.

The second is a slight blue(ish) flutter in the high graphics mode during gaming. I have noted that it does this only initially, and it clears up quickly if you continue play. I guess it would be a driver integration twitch (in that it is commonly noted and gets better, not worse with time) and is not characteristic of a hardware problem.

A third comment on the web is that the touch sensor switching along the top edge are not sensitive. To the contrary, I have found them extremely sensitive and have no trouble with the slightest touch. Hand lotion does not matter. just don't expect them to respond during times when other mice wouldn't either.

XPS 13 MUST READ REVIEW!!

Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, Finances, surfing the web, internet games, geneolgy, children's homework

Review:
This laptop is awesome! I usually don't take the time to write reviews, but this laptop had to be mentioned.

First, the specs:
Windows edition: Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
Processor: Intel(R)Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40 GHz 2.40 GHz
Memory: RAM 4.0 GB
System Type: 64-bit Operating System
Display Adaptor: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G
(Friendly note: Always get the fastest processor, graphics card and internal memory that you can afford, I got this package on Dell's 25% off deal which made it more affordable for me.)

Before purchasing, I read all the customer reviews here and a few on the web after searching on Google as I was comparing to other brands and wanted to make an informed decision as I didn't know much about laptops as I have used desktops my whole life and this was going to be my first.

This laptop looks fantastic as I went with the obsidian black and is made and put together well. It has a solid feel. One of the online comparisons explained that the overall appearance is sharp, the keyboard is laid out well and the mouse pad is postioned perfectly especially at night when the keyboard lights up so you don't have to turn on any other lights.

I went with the 9 cell battery which I do recommend and it does last the 3 and a half hours like it says it should.

Before purchasing I was worried that it wouldn't run my other software that was made well before Vista like Microsoft Office 2003. Everything installed like a champ even running Vista 64-bit. Even software that I ran with Windows 98 SE installed with no problems. So if you're looking to save a few dollars using software you may already have, rest assured. Operating systems use reverse engineering that allows older software to run in its enviroment. Software on the other hand usually will only work on the OS that it recommends or higher.

And, oh yes, The Dell 1510 Wireless-N WLAN internal Mini-Card and Vista detected my Netgear WNDR3300 router the first time and even a few from my neighbor houses down the road and had me connected to the internet in just a few minutes. Probably one of the easiest things I've done so far.

One thing, the blue-ray DVD drive doesn't come with the XPS 13, only on the XPS 16. So you have to decide if blue-ray or having a smaller more portable laptop like this 13 is more important. For me, portability was key.

Overall a sound investment. My children fight over who gets to use it next for their homework or checking their e-mail or facebook in the privacy of their rooms. The Vista Parental Controls work excellent reassuring us that they aren't surfing were they shouldn't. I Should have purchased a laptop years ago!

Mini 10V Review

Product Uses:
word processing, web browsing, email and calendar synching, e-book reading, test bed for freeware applications

Review:
The only issue I've found with the netbook is the fact that the mouse click buttons are not separate from the touchpad. Thus it's easy to drag the mouse accidently when trying to click on the left click mouse button.

The object of this purchase was to create a portable device with a keyboard larger than a Blackberry or i-Phone that would allow web browsing, document creation, e-book reading at no cost other than the hardware itself.

The portability of device meets expectations. While not pocketable, it will easily fit into a messenger bag, briefcase, etc.

For software I removed the pre-installed Microsoft Works (a truly lamentable offering from Microsoft). I installed the free anti-virus product from AVG, OpenOffice Suite from OpenOffice.org, Firefox as a browser, Picasa for photograph editing/organization, PuTTY to allow connections to Unix servers, E-book reader, Opanda for viewing photographic information embedded in photo files, CCleaner and Belarc for computer maintenance, and CutePDF for creating .PDF files.

Bottom cost for software (personal use only, not in a corporate environment) - zero dollars.

Screen is adequate for creating documents and surfing and reading e-books.

The keyboard is quite nice, with a nice touch. As noted, the touchpad could be better.

Performance is greater than I had expected from the Atom chip. Not bad at all - although I wouldn't care to run some hardware intensive app such as PhotoShop CS4. (My unit has a single gig of RAM with the 160 gig hard drive, 1.6 chip and Windows XP SP3 Home edition). I did download Google Earth, and the performance is quite adequate.

Overall it is not a substitute for a fully outfitted laptop, but for it's stated purpose (above) it's fine. I've become quite fond of the little beastie.

Use:- Web Development, Music and Watching Movies.

Windows Experience Rating:-
Processor – 6.6
Memory – 5.9
Graphics (Desktop Performance For Windows Aero) – 4.9
Gaming Graphics – 6.2
Hard Disk – 5.9

Pros:-
- One of my main concern while deciding to buy this laptop was any heating issue, the processor is placed right below the touchpad so I was concerned if it would become too uncomfortable to place wrist on it, the fact is that the area around the touchpad does get noticeably warm but I wouldn’t say it was uncomfortable, I don’t have AC in my room so in a air-conditioned room this will be hardly noticeable. However those who plan to use this notebook on lap I would strongly recommend using atleast a basic notebook pad for comfort. Overall I would say Dell has done an excellent job in cooling.
- Silent Operation
- Good Performance
- Beautiful Display
- Vertical Scroll strip in the touchpad works flawlessly. Touchpad positioning is very good accidentally brushing over the touchpad while typing is not very likely.
- Battery Life is good, I get anywhere between 4 – 6 hours in Balanced Power Mode.

Cons:-
- Bass output and overall loudness of the speaker didn’t meet my expectations.
- Drive Vibration, on loading a dvd there is vibration which is not subtle and lasts for around 10-20 seconds, I am seriously disappointed with this one.
Final Verdict:- A Totally Value for Money Laptop.

when i bought this laptop i was comparing it to the other one i have from acer. i bought it last year for AU$600 its got 4GB Ram, Vista Professional and ATI Radeon graphic card. it works like a charm, no matter how heavy load i run. dell in comparison is costly with less features, internet speed is slow on cable i don't even wanna try it wireless, the output sound is very low. so overall its an OK laptop. i wouldn't recommend it to most people. just those ones who only do typing and stuff on it. i have recommended acer to many friends before and they have all gone with the suggestion. The webcam quality is as good as acer and it doesn't heat up too soon like HPs. so its good for professionals may be but not good for home or family use.

A review of Dell Customer Service

Product Uses:
web browsing email, ms office

Review:
This is not so much a review of the product than a review of the service I received as a result of the product being defective. Upon notification of an issue, Dell immediately dispatched a complete internal replacement of commonly known parts that would fix the problem. Technician arrived the next business day, replaced the parts and departed with a working PC. Unfortunately within an hour, the PC started exhibiting the same symptoms as before.

I called Dell support and they were willing to immediately dispatch the technician again to service the computer. However, as an experienced engineer, I knew that the only solution I wanted was a complete replacement since the failure happened within the first few days of ownership. The only drawback to this transaction was that it took Dell several days to get the exchange approved and on its way.

Once the new PC arrived, I realized that Dell had upgraded the memory for free, it was initially maxed out with 4 - 1Gb modules, however, Dell sent the new PC with 3 - 2 Gb modules, which will make it easier to upgrade to an 8 Gb system.

Apart from the failure, I am pleased with the service, and am finally pleased with the PC. I realize that the failure mode was an odd anomaly which is hard to diagnose. I would recommend this PC line to anyone who is looking for a desktop for web browsing and general office tasks.

9/20/11
Dear Dell,
You asked for feedback, so here goes.
1) Two months ago, I decided to upgrade my personal computer. At the time, I had a Dell Dimension 4550 (20 GB Hard Drive; 256 MB DDR SDRAM, later upgraded to 1256 MB) that I bought in October, 2002. This computer was great for my needs until I could not download a current version of iTunes due to the capacity of the hard drive. For security, I’d run MSE on it for years, and all worked perfectly.
2) I chose to go back with Dell b/c of the previous good experience, and b/c Dell was my company’s choice (I work at Milliken & Co, Spartanburg, SC); all the Dell laptops I’d used for work had been good. The computer guys at Milliken helped me make my current selection (I am a computer illiterate). I use my Dell laptop some at home via my ATT U-verse wireless router, and it works great.
3) This new computer has been very disappointing for the following reasons:
a. In general, it just seems to process slowly; I feel like I’m waiting all the time for things to happen.
b. Surfing the web seems to be slow - this is not the case when I use my business laptop via the wireless router – it is as quick & responsive as ever.
c. The monitor suddenly just “blacks out” for 3-4 seconds. This normally happens when I’m on the internet; this did not happen with my previous desktop.
d. Occasionally, the fan will come on, and is so loud, I have to turn the computer off – very annoying
e. I ordered the slim tower – looks pretty good, and saves space (I stand it up vertically), but is there some trick to getting a disk to stay in the drive when loading it?
4) I shared some of these issues with a work associate – his response “you should have gone with a Mac”.
5) I guess I’m stuck with what I’ve got. I admit that I have not called Dell support for help - I just don’t have the time or patience right now.
So there you have it.

I wrote a review right after I got this computer a few months after it made its debut, so I decided to write a new review on how its held up through the years. Its held up great! No changes to the speed, gaming has been great, but one thing: when you order from Dell, don't get McAfee-get Kaspersky's. I got a trojan that forced me to factory restore the PC, and Kaspersky's software permanently deleted the virus as if it never happened. And even after that, the PC is doing great! Also try to get a backup hard drive (just in case). Also I recently got a 5.1 speaker system and it sounds GREAT! Don't let Dell try to make it seem like the system is horrible at starting price: This game EASILY plays Portal 2 at about 70 fps and I got it at starting price! Nothing bad to say about it-I haven't pulled my hair out yet!

As the title says, I've owned an M14x for about 6 months now. I have an i7 processor with 8 gig o' RAM, and the HD video card and screen. I absolutely love it! Battery power is surprisingly good when simply surfing the web, watching videos, listening to music, etc., but when graphic-intensive performance is required then make sure you have an electrical outlet handy. I play online games (especially "World of Warcraft" & the "DiRT" series)& have all game's options maxed-out, and I still run great frame rates smooth as butter (as long as it's plugged-in). It does run a bit hot, and I kinda wish there was a more adequate air inlet to the cooling fan on the bottom, but so far this hasn't been an issue. Onboard speakers and video camera are both more than adequate. Plenty of fun adjusting keyboard colors, and playing with video camera software. It definitely gets everyone's attention! Overall, I highly recommend it.

Review:
First off, this is a powerhouse. The fact that the fan kicks on when you are playing CPU and GPU intensive games should hardly come as a surprise. i7 processors and 1.5 or 3.0 GB of VRAM comes at the price of substantial heat. I was nervous before I got this machine, hwoever let me say that for the majority of tasks, passive cooling is adequate. With an SSD like mine in it, it doesn't make ANY noise! For right now, the moment one of the CPU threads goes above about 25% usage, even temporarily, the fan will turn on. I had a similar issue with my Studio XPS 1340 prior to a BIOS update, so I expect the same with this machine.

All in, this is just a beauty to use. It's aesthetically amazing, the AlienFX colors and customization is perfect, and it doesn't come with a ton of bloatware.

Specs: i7 2630qm, GT555m 1.5, OCZ Vertex 2 HD, 1600x900 WLED.

Pros: Performance, styling, build quality, Price (It's amazing to get this kind of specs for under $1300!!). Ran L4D2 and Crysis 2 on max settings. l4d2 had 60+ FPS, Crysis hit approximately 40. Perfectly playable! Incredible from this small a rig!

Cons: none as of yet aside from the fan noise that will be fixed by BIOS update. Screen quality could be enhanced (RGBLED would have been nice upgrade option...)

installing this computer and transfering all the data and programs, setting, printers, etc. is a work better left to a specialist. It took three days to get this done. Once everything is installed this XPS is fast and boots up almost as fast as a flash memory device.
One flaw though is the download speed. in Speed Tests the XPS 8300 reaches maximum of 5 MPS. My old Inspiron 8600 laptop gets up to 9.5 and my wife's XPS laptop reaches 14 MPS. I am convinced that I have a faulty network card.
I need to contact Dell Technical Support for that, if only they were at a different location.
