Solid NetBook / Laptop for media everywhere
Product Uses:
watch hd video, share media around the house, web browsing
Review:
We purchased the Inspiron 11z primarily for my wife as an around-the-house portable after considering an iPad and a wide range of netbooks. What made us pick it was that it provided a true HD video experience yet used a normal Intel processor and could run every version of Windows 7, in a NetBook-sized package.
It hasn't dissapointed. We use the media center built into Windows 7 to watch TV recorded on a different computer as well as videos from a range of source, music anywhere in the house - basically any time we want media away from our central home theater.
Web site browsing is slightly compromised by the height of the screen, but better than a regular NetBook due to the higher resolution. We originally purchased the 6 cell larger battery, but then got a 3 cell unit because the battery life is really very good even with just the 3 cell and it keeps the unit very trim. The 6 cell basically acts as a large stand in the back which is fine for use on a surface (nice really) but somewhat awkward for use on a lap.
Wireless performance has been very good (we routinely stream HD video to it from another computer over wireless) and the built in HDMI port rocks - we can take it with us and plug into anyone's HD TV to share content.
The multitouch capabilities on the touchpad are too spotty to use routinely; they work more by accident than by design. It'd be nice if the keyboard was backlit because we often use the unit in a dark room. Overall, highly recommend it as a tremendous value - but get the 3 cell battery; it lasts long enough.

Great Laptop for the Price!
Product Uses:

Review:
I am a senior IT professional with 23 years in IT. I bought this 1545 as a gift for my daughter's 30th birthday (Pink, with a pink Logitech mouse). It is a GREAT laptop. I bought one on special sale at the lower end of the price spectrum, but I am very happy with the quality and performance of this laptop. It's VERY quiet, has a wonderful display, and the keyboard and built-in webcam are just right. The Windows 7 experience is first rate, with a simple setup out-of-the-box. It even automatically discovered our wireless network during final setup. I had been planning on buying my wife and I new Windows 7 laptops from another vendor, but was so happy with this Dell Inspiron 15 for my daughter I also bought my wife a new Inspiron 15 in purple, and I got a blue Studio 15 for myself. Nice work Dell!!!

Excellent Laptop
Product Uses:
web development, home web surfing, photography/photo editing, graphic design
Review:
I've been researching a semi-desktop-replacement laptop for several months, and settled on the Studio XPS16 and Apple Macbook Pro 15". In the end, I truly wanted to make the switch to Mac, but for a similarly configured high end machine (top processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, extended warranty, etc) the Dell cost me $3029, shipped. The closest Apple would cost me $4600, and had slightly lower specs once Dell offered the i7-620M (2 Core), which Apple does not offer. So far, I'm very impressed with the Dell. I've used a series of Dell Latitudes issued by my business - the latest has good specs and is a solid laptop, but it's been finicky. The XPS is slimmer, lighter, just as solid feeling, and blows the Latitude D830 out of the water performance wise. So far, NONE of the shortcomings I've read about actually seem to be founded. The XPS 16 has no issue with heat. In fact, compared to the Latitude, it's downright cool. It runs with similar heat and noise to the Macbook I coveted. The keyboard is very nice. One reviewer complained of missing keys - all of which seem to exist on my XPS (the keyboard has a nice layout, and the backlighting is the best I've seen. Love the lighted caps-lock key. The trackpad is very precise and sensitive - not quite up to the Mac standards, but darn close. This was one of my biggest misgivings with the decision to go with the PC. I had planned a full day to reformat my drive and install my apps upon delivery. I can't STAND the bloatware that Dell has crammed on every other machine I've used. In the end, though, the bloatware was remarkably lightweight - some of it even seemingly useful. I uninstalled a few support apps, but left the Mcafee. The system seems none the worse for the wear. I left the camera and facial recognition software - it seems unobtrusive, and adds functionality I didn't want, but now think I may actually use... The SSD is fantastic, like others I've seen. Boot time to a FUNCTIONAL desktop is 27 seconds, even with Dell apps loading in the system tray. Office apps load instantly - by the time the second click is finished, the app is open. I realize this is the case with virtually any system with a good SSD, but it's worth mentioning, since the 256GB SSD is only a $400 upgrade when ordered with a new system. The, the RGBLED display is everything they say and more. Absolutely stunning, with fantastic color accuracy and viewing angles. The resolution is a bit too high for the screen size IMO, which is great in Photoshop, but when surfing the web I do have trouble sometimes finding a happy medium for readable text. On the couch, with the laptop on my chest and the screen close to my face, it's awesome. Two pages side by side are totally readable, and look better than some high end desktop monitors I've used.

The Inspiron 1545 feels a pretty solid laptop, has a nice screen, keyboard and trackpad have excellent response with a quality feel. Performs very well (C2D P8600, 3GB RAM, ATI256MB, 320GB HD). Media card reader accepts SDHC cards - brilliant. Downsides - no hard drive activity or caps lock indicators, no pause/break key. Haven't yet tested battery life as only took delivery today.

Cons: Keys are hard to read, black on silver would be easier.

Fantastic light laptop
Product Uses:
travel warrior, multimedia laptop (web-tv youtube hulu etc), text processing
Review:
My wife needed a laptop for work. Mostly typing, and videoconferencing. She wanted something light but with full keyboard and decent screensize. This is perfect. She absolutely loves it.
We got the Ubuntu base model, and it is more than sufficient. Video works great. Even Flash works fine (up to 480p). Open Office works great for her MS Word formatted documents.Everything is snappy. The lappy keeps always cool.
Cons:
1. no SSD. It is considerably slower to boot than my Vostro A90 with the same Ubuntu version, because it uses a traditional hard drive, instead of an SSD.
2. The Ubuntu version that is installed, which has a severe regression in the graphics displayed. I just installed the latest Kubuntu and that was it, but Dell should have noticed that.
3. Battery life is nothing to write home about. Again, an SSD would have helped a lot.
I am giving this laptop 5 stars because of the incredible value and captivating design. Give it an SSD option and Dell will have an absolute killer.
Thank you, Dell, for supporting Linux and selling me hardware with it. I'll keep buying :)

Awesome laptop!
Product Uses:
Gaming, running vm's, web browsing, connecting to hdtv
Review:
I love this laptop! Do not be discouraged by reviews when you search for "Alienware m15x" as many of these reviews are for the older Area-51 m15x. This laptop is a performer! It definitely outperforms my desktop. Spending the extra money on the upgrade to the full HD display was definitely worth it! The screen on this laptop is absolutely gorgeous! I am definitely impressed with the performance of this laptop, it is everything I had hoped to get. Wondering about the DisplayPort on your laptop? Dell is nice enough to include an HDMI converter so that you can easily connect to your TV. Laptop is heavy when carrying around, duh, but that is to be expected for Alienware and the specs packed into it. Does run a little hot, I suggest elevating the back of the laptop for better performance. It runs Virtual Machines like they are nothing, barely breaks a sweat! The illuminated keyboard is definitely an attention-getter, even more so when you create some of the advanced events in the FX editor. There are cheaper laptops out there with similar specs but with Alienware you are paying for the prestige of the name and the look. Many of the other laptops out there just look downright plain! This one turns heads and has people asking, "What's that?".
Two complaints I have: The standard touchpad complaint, the thing is just weird, I would recommend using an external mouse. My laptop shipped with an outdated version of the Command Center, which meant that the power scheme settings program was incompatible with Windows 7. Also, the firmware for the keyboard was outdated and it took some doing to actually locate the download for the Command Center on Dell's website.
Shipping estimate: I had received a shipping estimate of almost 30 days from the time of my order! I was unhappy with Dell for taking such a long time but was pleasantly surprised to find that my order shipped on 2/26 and arrived on 3/2 (when my original estimated ship date was 3/15!)!

Beast of a Laptop
Product Uses:
edit hd video, half-life 2, skype, downloading music, streaming video, general web surfing
Review:
I don't always go for the latest and greatest technology, but the combo of the Core i7 processor, Windows 7 Ultimate, and DDR3 RAM were too much for me to resist. I wanted a computer that would be able to handle anything my family threw at it. We edit HD video and play games, and as expected, the M15x has never missed a beat. Plus, the lower-intensity stuff we use it for like emailing and word processing, is quick and painless. Due to its high level of performance and cutting edge technology, I know it's going to be working for us for a long time.
The ability to change the color of the lights on the keyboard, speakers, media keys, etc obviously doesn't affect the performance, but it does make the computer look awesome.
I would recommend it to anyone with that need for speed or anyone who wants a laptop that can do it all.
I would not recommend it for someone who prioritizes portability since it is heftier than your average 15 inch laptop. If that is the case, the little brother M11x would be a better fit.

Totally Awesome Laptop!!!!
Product Uses:
full time student, watch movies online, play sims3, download songs and movies online, web surfing
Review:
This laptop is top of the line and it is AWESOME!! I upgraded the system because I play the Sims3 and I wanted it to run smoothly without any trouble. System specifications: Intel Core i7-720QM Quad Core Processor 1.6GHz(2.8 GHz Turbo) 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 6GB at 1333MHz 15.6 WideHD 1920x1080 500GB SATAII 7,200RPM
Pros: I have wanted an Alienware laptop when they first hit the market. I can finally afford one! the laptop is quiet all the time. The lights are really cool. No problem with the face recognition at all. It is not as heavy as everyone was saying, so that is a plus. It is extremely fast and I can run multiple things without any problem. It was ready to go right out of the box. I received the laptop 3 weeks before it was due! The touch pad is a little rough but it works just fine.
Cons: The only thing I see that might be a problem is not having enough USB ports. No other problems for me that I see.

Review:
All things considered I have enjoyed my laptop very much. I should have gotten a better graphics card, the one that came with the system is a little weak for games. It plays video very good and I like catching the T.V. shows I miss. It is so much faster than my old computer. It was easy to get the settings the way I like it. I don't like the trial MacAfee popping up all the time asking me to "buy now!". Over all I like the portability and ease of use, I also like being to be able to do multible apps at once. It was easy to sync my phone with it and transfer addresses and web sites. I have not done much music stuff with it yet but what I have done has turned out great and loaded up easily.

Excellent laptop, would buy again in a heart beat.
Product Uses:
Gaming, blue ray & high def video, music - creative x-fi mb rocks!, web surfing, photoshop & music editing
Review:
Let me first say how skeptical I was when I was shopping at Dell's website. I build desktop computers and am very tech savy. I knew I needed a laptop and I had a budget of $1500. It needed to game, have a Blue Ray player, a 1080p display and I was hoping for 5.1 analogue output, and if I could get it digital audio out. I knew this would not be easy to find.
Then I saw the Studio XPS 16 and it's "Mac" style design and quality... And it's price was just plain amazing. I had hit the jackpot! The Dell XPS signature event was on for that week!
So I set out to configure the laptop... P8600 C2D, 4GB DDR3, 500GB 7.2k HD, 1080p display, Blue Ray BURNER for a $35 addon??!?, ATI HD4670 WITH HDMI 7.1 audio/video out?!?!? AND 5.1 analogue out?? Back lit keyboard, 2.0MP webcam... How much was this machine you might ask? $2000 and change at full price. But wait! It was the XPS Signature event - so knock off $520?!?!? I knew I hit pay dirt. And so you have it folks an amazing machine that even Steve Jobs would be happy to own aesthetic wise. And I will tell you right now, it maxes every game out I've thrown at it. Playing Mass Effect 2 maxed out at 1920x1080 = bliss.

Good Laptop
Product Uses:
web development, streaming video
Review:
I would have to say that the 15 inch screen is too small. My eyes are getting a bit older, and the print is very small. I don't want to change this resolution because I won't get as much desktop room for all my open windows, which get to about 10-15 as I work through the day.
The lid is disappointing. It does not have a latch and it wants to stay closed. You will need to squeeze your finger under the lid and hold both the lid and the body to pry it open.
It was so easy to go to abc.com to grab one of my favorite series, plug in an HDMI cable. There was no configuration necessary and the display fit our large screen without any adjustment.
I have not experienced any slow performance as of yet, and as I said, I open many windows while I work all day. My laptop is in use between 12 and 16 hours every day. I haven't played my favorite video game on it yet, so I am sorry Gamers, I can't make comments on the performance for that.
The integrated wireless is awesome. I have not hooked into our home network via cat5 cable, because I have not had a need. The speed is great and I don't lose signal with my wireless. I use VPN while I work many times through the day and my old XPS was way too slow to handle it while on wireless, but this new laptop handles it as if I was hard wired in. The performance is satisfactory and many times above satisfactory.
The sound amazed me coming from a laptop. The first thing I noticed about it was that the speakers don't sound like those old muffled non-base speakers laptops used to have. When I use my Itunes, I can hear my music as if it were coming from a radio. The sound is wonderful just with the basic setup. Obviously it is personal sound, not exactly something you would want to turn the volume all the way up with, but it is great if you are at your desk and don't want to put in your headphones.
I also purchased the Microsoft Bluetooth wireless mouse to go with this laptop. It is very disappointing in the way that the bluetooth seems to shut itself down if I walk away for a small period of time. Maybe this is something I can configure, but I haven't found where to do that yet. Basically, I have to wiggle the mouse over and over until it actually works again.
The last thing I would like to mention is the touch "buttons" above the function keys. These buttons control sound, wireless and bluetooth functionality and also have a pause/play selection. These touch buttons are very sensitive, so every time I reach up to use the delete key, print screen, insert or any of the latter function buttons, my fingers set off one of those buttons. It barely takes a touch to activate them, so mostly my sound gets turned up and down consistently because I use my delete button a lot while I work. It would be great if dell moved those buttons up further or made them less touchy.

Review:
My previous laptop was a Dell Inspirion and I loved it. We have always bought Dell and I didn't consider another brand when I purchased the Studio 17.
I wanted a large screen and this was the driving reason I purchased this laptop.
The screen is great. I can even say I like Windows 7. My only complaint is the keyboard. It is very flimsy. When I type the keyboard flexes to the point that it is very noticeable. The number pad is even worse. It flexes so bad that the number pad need to struck very hard to get the numbers to register.

I like my new laptop, but a few drawbacks
Product Uses:

Review:
I did a lot of research before I finally decided on the Studio 15. I love the ease of use of Windows 7. The art I chose for the cover is great. It is fantastic. I am still learning all the ins and outs of the system, but I like the computer overall.
There are a few drawbacks with this computer though.
1. The lid of the computer seems a bit flimsy and I do not like the fact that it does not latch closed.
2. I am also not too keen on the power button on the outside hinge on the lid. It is a nice idea, but the execution and placement could have been better.
3. The computer feels quite flimsy to me.
Bottom line is I like a lot of the software features, but it feels a bit cheap to me. I have an HP laptop that is a coule of years old and did not get a new one from HP because I found better deals on DELL, but you get what you pay for.
The Studio 15 is much better suited for a student rather than a woman with a career and a family. I should have saved up a bit more money and gotten another HP.

Product Uses:

Review:
The amount of features and hardware packed into this laptop is impressive. My main concern however is the use of the intel core 2 processor when other alienware models as well as most new laptops are now using the i3/i5/i7 family of processors. Perhaps power drainage was the issue but if this is marketed as a sub-15" laptop and not a netbook then why not implement a current and relevant processor. Or at least offer an upgrade for m11x owners once it is implemented for a fair price. Otherwise awesome laptop though.

I love this laptop!
Product Uses:

Review:
So far, so good, with a few small exceptions. While reviews are correct in that it does get hotter than one would expect from a laptop, i've found i have to really push it with sli graphics on to make it uncomfortable to have on my lap.
Lighted keyboard is outstanding and very easy to type on, especially after coming from an inspiron 700m with its tiny keyboard. Webcam is very nice, not hi-end but does the job.
The big drawback for me is the facial recognition feature which simply requires too much light in a room to work correctly. I use this laptop in mid to low lighting too often to consider using the facial recognition software, which is disappointing being a Trek fan.
All in all, i love this laptop after about a month of using it. Screen is gorgeous with impressive graphics. Speakers are in the base unit, not the lid, unlike the inspiron 700m where i had to replace the wires a few times due to them breaking; no more of that!
Overall: best laptop i've ever owned!

Cons
There are some issues that current Dell XPS 1645 are encountering these issues are being investigated by DELL such issues include: 1) CPU Throttling which will lower its "speed" when under heavy load to compensate for its small 90 watt AC adapter. 2) Random freezes that are unexplainable.
Once these issues have been addressed this is a awesome laptop! definitely recommended!

It has been almost 2 months since I've brought this laptop. I have to say so far the experience has been a good one. Pros: -Really nice design of the laptop. -Backlit keyboard, a great feature. This would be the most useful little feature if you work in the dim ligth or no light. -It is fast and I mean it. I was installing Visual studio and was also installing a bunch of small stuff and copying a large file from network was still able to surf web normally and open word doc with out a lag simultaneously. Great processor performance. - very nice screen. - decent sound for a laptop.
Cons: Ah! like any other product this is no exception. It has got it's share of problems.
- I 've replaced the power adapter with in the first week of purchase. My power adapter was getting unusally hot (out of the box). The customer service got me a new one the very next day ! and so far everything is fine. - The laptop tends to get a little hot sometimes although it is not consistent.
This is my 4th dell computer. My last purchase was 3 years ago ( dimension E510). Over all I would say I am satisfied with my purchase. Although,I strongly recommend warrenty for atleast 1 year ( definitely , in-home service) saves a lot of frustration.

I bought this laptop with the Intel Core 2 Duo P7350, 2.0GHz, 6GB ram, 500G HD. I love the 17 inch screen. This is my first laptop, i have two Dell desktops. This machine is very quiet, nice sturdy build. It did start to get very warm after awhile. I just bought a chill mat to correct it. The number pad and webcam are nice. It starts up and shuts down fast. This laptop was a good deal for all the features on it. I also like the Dell Dock, and the free Windows 7 upgrade. I also waited about a little over a week after i ordered to get my laptop, which i thought was fast considering they had to build it. The only thing i was a little disappointed with was the sound quality and speakers. It could be better, but with some tweaking i was able to make it sound somewhat better. External speakers really helps. The Creative Sound Blaster software also helps some. This is a good laptop with a reasonable price.

I got this laptop with the Full HD Screen, 4GB RAM, 1GB GTX 260M Graphics, 230GB HDD, 1.60GHz i7 CPU and it runs games on full spec brilliantly. Cysis s great, COD4, COD5, MW2 and many others run on full spec with no problems.
PROS.. - Very Fast - 2 hour battrey lift (even with lights on) - Keyboard lights are great - You can turn the lights off - Looks Great - Long power cable - Stays cool - Metal Body makes it look even better - Good quality webcam - Microphones placed on top of the monitor which is great because my last laptop had them below the keyboard and people listening on the other end could hear all my typing, so this i great
CONS.. - Heavy, but not a suprise with what it has in it - Power Adapter gets very hot - Facal Recognition is a good idea but you can use a photo to log on, Iused a 5 year old photo of myself and it worked, it wasnt even in color, it was in cepia. - Stealh Mode is to reduce energy consumption, but it doesnt work on battery - Touch Pad is hard get use to - Keys on keyboard arent that sensitive running on battery, you have to hit the keys hard just to get characters to work. Im running on battery now and im having to go throught the review to check letters arent missing, I have found loads so far.
These are some of the problems with the Alienware, but these are only minor problems and nothing that should stop you from buying it. This is a great laptop and I highly recommend this to anyone.

Review:
I love this laptop, I used to own only desktops and the last 2 desktops were dells and they did the job and easy to upgrade if I wanted too,but upgrading now costs more than than buying new. now I want something portable and didn't want to upgrade in the future and this is it. I like the way they have the screen hooked to the base, Ive seen other laptops, and this design is the best I've seen so far. I did some research before I bought this and the only thing I could find that caught my eye was the heat on the bottom and they were right but the power it delivers is worth it. I was weary of windows 7 but so far I like it better than XP. all my older equipment installed the drivers no problem as I thought it would have problems

Great Laptop - Great Price!
Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, Finances, surfing the web, downloading music and videos
Review:
I bought the Studio 1737 and these are the specs I got; Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 2.00 GHZ, 6GB Ram, 500GB HDD. I added the optional backlit keyboard and Bluetooth and Facial Recognition software.
Pros: 1- Beautiful 17 inch display with great color. 2- Optical Drive is cool. I hated the tray that slides out. 3- Starts up quick and shuts down fast as well. 4- Surprisingly quite and doesn't get hot. I use this puppy on my laps for hours or so and its great! 5- Keyboard is nicely spaced. Had to get used to the size because Ive always had 15 inch laptops in the past and never had a numeric keypad, which is very cool when you get used to. You also have the option to add the back light which is awesome because I use my laptop a lot late at night. 6- Lots of USB ports (5). Also incls. HDMI port and E-SATA and SD card reader. 7- Webcam and its features are great. 8- Dell DOCK is awesome. You see this on Macs and it makes Windows more productive. 9- Came with free upgrade with Windows 7 Upgrade.
Cons: 1- Optical drive can be kind of loud when its running. 2- No lights on the media buttons above the keyboard. Sucks when using your pc in a dark setting. 3- Heavy at 7.5 lbs. but it is a desktop replacement so buyer beware. 4- Touch pad is centered under the keyboard not the laptop. Just have to get used to it I guess. 5- Sound quality can be a little better. You would think bigger laptop bigger sound but that's not the case. Easily solved if you buy some external speakers. 5- Windows Vista...enough said.
I hope this helps anyone whose shopping for a good laptop but doesn't want to break the piggy bank. I spent under $1100 with tax and delivery including my added features of back-lit keyboard ($25), Blue-tooth ($20), and facial recognition program ($25), and a 2 year subscription to McAffe ($99)Internet Security. Not a bad deal if you shop around.
Laptops aren't cheap so don't just go to a store and just pick one of the shelf. Build yourself a system that you are going to use under your own specific specifications. Trust me its worth doing its that way even though you have to wait which took me about 10 days from ordering to receiving. Happy buying and good luck!

Great Laptop
Product Uses:
web development, graphic design, editing movies
Review:
I purchased the laptop in September because my four year old was dominating the usage of my old Dell laptop. I am extremely happy with the performance of the Studio XPS. It has great speed and excellent screen resolution. I also like how I can operate in power saver mode to conserve my battery. However, I thought the battery life would last a little longer than it does.
