Title:
It's a netbook with most notebook features
Product Uses:
internet, media streaming, chatting, backup pc
Review:
I needed to replace my old Inspiron 700m, however needed more of a netbook without a cramped screen and/or keyboard. This fits the bill very well. Mine is maxed out with 4GB, Win7 Premium, 250GB HDD, BT, and WiFi n however I intended to use this mostly for basic internet. I also intend to dual-boot with Fedora 13 Linux halving the drive to both OSs.
PROS: very light weight, good sized keyboard, very well equipped, runs cool & efficient
CONS: Very plastic, so prone to scratching easily, Dell's famous excessive shareware everywhere, battery bulks out (however doubles as a stand).
I reformatted the drive keeping the recovery partition, but reinstalled Win7 Premium from DVD via an external USB DVD drive to eliminate all the "Dellware". Everything else runs flawlessly and is great as either a main PC or even a low cost spare PC solution. I know many complain about the touchpad, however it's not all that bad; just get a Bluetooth mouse and problem solved.

Best small form factor laptop... PERIOD.
Product Uses:
software development, Gaming, multimedia streaming
Review:
After lugging around a 17" desktop replacement for the last 3 years I set off to find a laptop that can handle the tasks of being a desktop replacement but in a form factor smaller the 14" and have the ability to be off plug for 7+ hours when needed.
This is one of the select few laptops that have the ability to do this. I can throw at it a good amount of 3d gaming and then switch to integrated video to handle my work tasks...
This is a phenominal little device with lots of power. The price point cant be beat.
Im very happy with my purchase and look foward to using the laptop for some time.
Just to give you an idea of the flexability of this laptop, I just recently had the laptop hooked up to my 32" plasma LCD watching netflix instantly thru the HDMI port while I was playing LOTRO on my 24" monitor (high graphics setting) and the laptop never skipped a beat.
I then took the laptop with me to an indoor playground with my kids where I hooked up to the locations wireless network and did some work while the kids played for 5 hours straight. I was off plug the whole time and left the facility with still over 30% on the battery. AMAZING flexability!
The only drawback for this device is the well documented hinge issue. After looking on the dell community forums, I felt confidant that dell is aware of the issue and is working on a solution.
Im hoping the solution will become available within my warantee period. So I'm putting my faith in Dell's support for this product. I hope that this faith is well placed.
This is the only reason why I subtracted one star from my rating. If it wasn't for this mechanical flaw the laptop would be a 5+ star device.

This laptop is so convenient to carry around and with the 6 cell battery you do not have to worry about carrying your charger with you. The wireless card makes it easy to connect to the internet and overall, the computer is fun. It is responsive and faster than I thought it would be. It is loaded with extras that do not bog down its performance. I loaded Office 2007 and it runs flawlessly. This computer is highly recommended.

Review:
My wife and I bought this laptop as a travel system for communications, trip planning and for first cut photo editing. Just completed our first trip and are very happy with the systems performance.
We were looking for something a little bigger than the Mini's on the market mainly because of our older eyes and my big hands. On the flip side, we like to pack light. So far we are very happy with the 11Z

amazing little notebook or is it netbook
Product Uses:
office, Travel, video, movies while flying
Review:
This is a great computer!!! I do a lot of work with it and travel. I originally bought a netbook, thinking I would have something that had long batt life and I was correct. However, the system had no a s s in it. There were a lot of delays consistent with a slow processer. So I took a chance on the Dell 11z. There is nothing like it on the market. I thought I was getting a high end netbook but was very surprised.
The system is much much lighter than a notebook but slightly heaver than a netbook. When the system powered up with windows 7, the computer ran like a hot rod system. I was extremely pleased. In fact, I now do all my work on it, the batt life exceeds 8 hours, some times 7 if I do more than office type work.
I decided to see how powerful this system was. I loaded a game, World of Warcraft, and I was shocked. the system ran it! and it was playable. I wouldn't say it was great but it was playable.
I read complaints about the mouse touch pad. This is true about what folks are saying, or so I thought until I decide to learn how it actually works. I discovered, that the touch pad is awesome and works very well. Now, if the features are not to your liking, you have the option of turn them off. the touch pad runs as well as anything else.
Well, that is my reveiw. I highly recommend this system. but the question is still unclear, I have the power of a notebook with dual core 64 bit but the light weight and battery power of a netbook.
Very Very important. For this system to be a worth while long lasting computer, you must max out the specs. So, 4 GB mem and the SU4100 processor. The HD size is not as important. I would not recommend this system with anything less.

Excellent power and ease of use in a small package
Product Uses:
teaching office 2007 travel e-mail
Review:
I still use my eight year old inspiron laptop for teaching, which is a good example of Dell dependability. I needed to upgrade computers and decided to purchase the Inspiron 11z as a companion to my new Dell Studio XPS 8000. My need for a lap top were reduced to to limited travel. The portability, power, and capacity made it a good choice as a companion computer, allowing me to increase the size of a desk top. I recommend that you max the ram and hard drive. Small screen gets a little getting used to. The key are very good sized and a wireless mouse is also a great addition. You will need an external DVD if you are going to be loading disks on the road. Great little computer.

Very nice, usable Netbook
Product Uses:
Travel, web browsing/email, software development
Review:
Although it's defined as a "laptop", I consider the 11z as a "netbook" because of its compact size. The high resolution screen is beautiful, and the nearly full-sized keyboard is just fine for me (being a touch typist). The Celeron processor also runs perfectly fine, and I don't see any slowness after replacing McAfee with another light-weight AntiVirus equivalent and doing some minor system tweaking. A very nice machine to use as a netbook.
The only cons that I see, is that the 11z is composed of nearly all black plastic so it doesn't appear as polished or sturdy as some of the other available netbooks on the market. The 3-cell battery life is very limited compared to most other netbooks, going for about 2.5 hrs with WiFi activated and the screen at full brightness. Most netbooks can go for 4+ hours, but then again they are using a much lower-powered CPU with less processing power. The hard drive will also make a strange click-squish sound every once in a while which is a bit disturbing.
The only other thing that bothered me was that the 11z was suppose to come pre-installed with Windows 7 (since it was shipped after the Oct 22nd launch date of Win 7), but it arrived with Vista installed. Now I have to wait for the Win 7 upgrade DVD to arrive by mail in about 10 days, so that was a bit upsetting.
In the end, I'm happy with the 11z and will definitely make good use of it as a netbook travel companion.

Great souped up netbook.
Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, travel machine, tinkering machine
Review:
This is probably the best bang for the portable computing buck. Respectably runs Windows Vista with the standard 32 Bit Home Premium+2GB DDR2800 RAM. It IS upgradeable to 4GB with a cheap DIMM replacement. Plays back HD Hulu and YouTube well. This CPU kicks netbook ATOM butt.
The highlight is the larger high res screen that is expansive enough to run all standard websites with normal PC UI. Netbooks low res 1024x600 screens cut important sites off.
Last night while putzing with Windows Update and some file migration, The battery lasted 3 hours. 3 Cells. CULV processor is MUCH faster and uses less juice. It is easy to verify this... The Dell Mini 10 Atom netbook uses the exact same battery as the 11z.
399. Can't beat this.

Title:
Better than a Netbook
Product Uses:
Travel, web browsing, light gaming, office productivity
Review:
For the extra money over a netbook, you get a bigger screen, and most importantly you get a better Celeron processor than Atom-based netbooks. The Pentium option (recommended) adds a second core and 64-bit capability.
As usual, it is recommended you reformat the laptop with your own OS. The software configuration that Dell has out-of-the-box makes the laptop seem slower than it actually is. This laptop is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Linux (drivers are available for all hardware for those operating systems).
Interestingly, the model# of this laptop is the Inspiron 1101, whereas the Mini 10 is the Inspiron 1010. The similar numbers means Dell was probably going to name this the Dell Mini 11, but separated it from the netbook category due to the better processor.
You won't be able to play Crysis on this thing, but many older games (eg. Diablo II, Sim City 3K) play just fine. It will run Microsoft Office 2010 and Adobe Photoshop CS4 without lag.
Battery life is low with the 3-cell. The 6-cell battery gives it acceptable battery life, but it sticks out the bottom like many extended batteries do. You'll have to make the choice between good battery life with the 6-cell or the sleek and lightweight appearance with the 3-cell.

The bigger screen size makes it nicer than the mini 10 but I like both. Very light great key board size. the keys make a little clicking which is a bit annoying but over all the keyboard is great. I use a full size mouse so the key pad is not a question. Although I have used when unable to use the mouse and have not had a problem. But I do not keep my fingers on it like may do. So I am not moving the curser around unexpectedly. It has windows 7 home premium 64 bit installed. Very quick and had no problems. I would recommend to anyone wanting great mobility and a bigger screen than a netbook. Not have a dvd drive was not a problem just bought a portable to use when needed. great laptop

Great portable laptop
Product Uses:
college homework-word processing, light travel, internet browsing
Review:
This little computer is great and so lightweight. I wish I would have paid the extra money for a color case because the black is really boring but, hindsight is 20/20, right?! My specs are 2GB of memory, 250GB of hard drive, 1.3 GHz Pentium processor, and 6-cell battery (please note, this sticks out from bottom of computer by about an inch). The glossy screen is not very readable outside or in super-bright locations but, the definition in the screen while using normal inside light is beyond awesome. I love looking through pictures with this computer because the colors are very vibrant. A previous reviewer said that this computer could not even run Facebook and I disagree. I am a Farmville player and have had not a single glitch or freeze-up while using this computer. However, my memory and hard drive space may make up for any issues the other reviewer had--but, anymore 250GB should be a minimum for purchasing a computer if you want to do more than word process or surf the net.... The battery- it makes the computer heavier and sticks out like I mentioned before but, I really find that the angle is quite ergonomic and comfortable. I have gotten up to 8 hours out of the battery doing word processing and light net browsing with the screen turned to ½ brightness but, more common get about 6 hours. I have not listened to music on this computer or watched video though so this will decrease the expected life. As for the weight, if there wasn't this little extra I would have to use both hands to pry the lid up so, this weight is useful. -- My old Inspiron 6000 had a locking screen and this does not, probably why the hinges are made so tight. The keyboard is something like +90% of a full size and I think it is comfortable and have not had any problems adjusting--my boyfriend's hand are much larger than mine though and he has a little difficulty with it (but, at 6'3" tall he's bigger than the average person). My last comment has to do with the touchpad and scrolling features. The pad itself has been reworked from the original and it's a good thing. Other reviewers have said that the cursor will jump around because the pad is so squirrelly and I have had this twice but, after the second time I realized that part of my hand touching the pad. There are features that include the pinch and two finger scroll….they kinda suck to be honest. And though there is not a scroll icon on the far right side of the pad, there is a normal scroll section. This is not as good as the one on my Inspiron 6000 but, I expected that with a smaller touch pad and if it becomes that big of a deal, I can use my wireless mouse. Hope this helps with your decision making!!!

A good compact Laptop for easy portability
Product Uses:
college work, internet browsing, social networking, Travel
Review:
Pros: The laptop is thin and light, which means portable. I was looking at net books first but they were too small and too pricey for what they offered in features. My last laptop was a different brand, larger, heavier, and cumbersome in portability. The speed is decent and it has basic things I consider essential for me to function for my daily activities. I chose a larger 250 GB hard drive in order to down-load music and upload photos from my digital camera. I was surprised at how loud the speakers really are since I was expecting poor audio with a the compact Inspiron 11z. GPS is another cool feature to use on road trips. This is a great laptop to use for my on-line classes and college assignments. Based on its features and size, the 11z was the best deal out there and that is why I purchased my first Dell after considerable shopping around.
Cons: I find that the Celleron processor is not as fast as my husbands new i7 processor, but that is what I get for using his newly built PC first before I ordered my 11Z. There is no optical drive so I will eventually purchase an external optical drive down the road. I am not too crazy about the Dell ware. And the jury is still out on the new and improved touch pad. There was a tiny delay in production and shipping, however, I only waited three weeks to get my laptop.
Overall,I would still recommend the 11z to my friends and family.

travel warrior, multimedia laptop (web-tv youtube hulu etc), text processing
Review:
My wife needed a laptop for work. Mostly typing, and videoconferencing. She wanted something light but with full keyboard and decent screensize. This is perfect. She absolutely loves it.
We got the Ubuntu base model, and it is more than sufficient. Video works great. Even Flash works fine (up to 480p). Open Office works great for her MS Word formatted documents.Everything is snappy. The lappy keeps always cool.
Cons:
1. no SSD. It is considerably slower to boot than my Vostro A90 with the same Ubuntu version, because it uses a traditional hard drive, instead of an SSD.
2. The Ubuntu version that is installed, which has a severe regression in the graphics displayed. I just installed the latest Kubuntu and that was it, but Dell should have noticed that.
3. Battery life is nothing to write home about. Again, an SSD would have helped a lot.
I am giving this laptop 5 stars because of the incredible value and captivating design. Give it an SSD option and Dell will have an absolute killer.
Thank you, Dell, for supporting Linux and selling me hardware with it. I'll keep buying :)

Studio 17 kitchen, kids, tv laptop
Product Uses:
kitchen shopping, home entertainment, kids' homework, bit of software development, car / travel entertainment
Review:
Lovely bright 17" screen, much brighter than my 2007 work Latitude D820, though viewing angles can be a bit limited, and I suspect the contrast is a bit poor - it never really goes black. I can't see any stats for it on the website though. We use it for watching iplayer etc.
Bright enough for kids to watch in the car in daylight.
Speakers are loud enough to use in the kitchen while cooking without plugging into the stereo.
Dual headset sockets very useful with 2 kids - it means we can listen to something else in the car.
Nice big palmrest touch pad with some useful new gestures - eg the 2-finger enlarge. Not everyone can work it though! (I have an old 2004 Inspiron which seems to have the best touch pad, though smaller & without gestures.)
7200rpm disk seems fast compared to similar in D820. Windows 7 64-bit handy for running memory-intensive simulations for work (can use all available ram instead of just 1.9Gb)
Nice to have an integrated webcam for skype. The dual mics work well too.
I'm not a gamer, but the graphics are very fast for google earth etc - you get wave effects on the sea, and the 3d-buildings are smooth. The windows aero effects are quite nice.
Feels very robust, with good strong hinges. One of the old inspiron hinges broke a few years ago.
90w Power supply is compatible with my older dell laptops.
Minus points (not major issues):
Only 2 USB slots is limiting: D820 has 4. And they're on the right hand side so they can get in the way of a right-handed mouse user. This comes from the way the screen hinges work these days.
Big and heavy, but we keep it at home mostly. Power button next to the power socket - sometimes press it by mistake when plugging in the power line. Have reconfigured it from shutdown to hibernate now.
I think I should have got the backlit keyboard - a friend has it and it's useful in low-light sitting-room situations.
No disk activity light! I miss this when I'm working on the PC, though admittedly they're a distraction when watching video.
Fan can be a bit noisy, and it switches on and off, so we can't leave it on overnight in a bedroom. Fine for work though - disk very quiet. (There may be some configuration to choose which would reduce the CPU power to avoid the fan coming on.)
Slightly odd consumer-oriented keyboard: the function keys are upside-down, in that you have to press the Function button AND the function key. The default functions are pause/play/rewind etc for media playback, and stuff like screen brightness. Some of these are duplicated with the backlit touch-sensitive buttons above the keyboard, which is a bit pointless.

I was impressed by the notebook computer from the moment I turned it on. The pictures/video's are extremely accurate and clear. I bought the external mouse(wireless)and it works great. I just don't like those "pads" that are built in the laptop. Setup is very easy and making any adjustments to the setup is also a no-brainer. I'm very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend this product to anyone that can't spend thousands of dollars on a laptop. At this price I can't hardly believe what a value it is. One suggestion I would make is you may wish to pick another color than black as it does show fingerprints and smudges on all of the "shiny" surfaces. With that said, I whole-heartedly recommend this system. It's great!

I've been a Dell proponent for 10+ years. My last Inspiron (beefed up 5150) had lasted me at least 5 years without failure until the backlight power inverter went (still works great hooked up to my KVM and 2nd monitor). I needed a new laptop for an upcoming business travel conference and didn't need the same beefieness as previous (mostly connect to our VPN and use desktop connetction). This Inspiron is perfect for home and travel-- @home I get a great wireless signal and performance, and on the road I have great access to my desktop and cloud apps.
Cons: This was my first widescreen laptop display which, through no fault of Dell, caused me to reconfigure my desktop displays to fit the same perspective.

Travel, research, keeping in touch w/ children grandchildren, entertainment, education
Review:
One for my college bound granddaughter, one for myself and the third for my brother! Excellent price, excellent quality, excellent service. Exceeds my expectations in ease of operation, features and design. The folks at Dell are friendly and helpful, not automatons.
