Small, lightweight, inexpensive, mini traveler

Review:
So, MINI is good if you need something small. HDD, RAM are all right. CPU could be faster though...
The computer does not have any fan, so it is completely quiet. You may upgrade to 2GB, but there is only one slot.
Keyboard - standard.
Screen - too small... I mean, vertical resolution could be a little larger. 600 pixels is not enough. Many web pages do not appear completely.
Overall I am satisfied. The biggest issue is the screen. Speed is all right. Acceptable.

I can actually see everything on the screen too and the keyboard is perfect. I was totally shocked when I got it how nice it would be. I know on Christmas morning she will go crazy. Mini 10 - small in stature, BIG on value!

Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, Finances, online gaming, gps navigation, rip/burn dvd/cd's, general computer stuff!

Review:
I was truly surprised at the capabilities of this computer! I wasn’t expecting much in the way of performance from such a small device. I bought the mini mainly to use as a mobile GPS for my work truck. The Mini has worked so well, I have transferred all my laptop functions to it, and gave my son my old laptop. I REALLY like the fact that it runs on XP- makes things easier for me. I bought a dvd/cd burner (Lightscribe) as an add on – integrated seamlessly – highly recommend.

On the negative side: sound from speakers is severely lacking, however, the sound card is terrific (I have the integrated Bluetooth module w/Dell B.T. stereo headset). The keyboard/mouse pad takes some getting used to and of course, it has a small display.

Overall, I highly recommend the Mini 10. If you buy this netbook, you won’t be disappointed!

Studio 17 kitchen, kids, tv laptop

Product Uses:

Review:
Lovely bright 17" screen, much brighter than my 2007 work Latitude D820, though viewing angles can be a bit limited, and I suspect the contrast is a bit poor - it never really goes black. I can't see any stats for it on the website though. We use it for watching iplayer etc.

Bright enough for kids to watch in the car in daylight.

Speakers are loud enough to use in the kitchen while cooking without plugging into the stereo.

Dual headset sockets very useful with 2 kids - it means we can listen to something else in the car.

Nice big palmrest touch pad with some useful new gestures - eg the 2-finger enlarge. Not everyone can work it though! (I have an old 2004 Inspiron which seems to have the best touch pad, though smaller & without gestures.)

7200rpm disk seems fast compared to similar in D820.
Windows 7 64-bit handy for running memory-intensive simulations for work (can use all available ram instead of just 1.9Gb)

Nice to have an integrated webcam for skype. The dual mics work well too.

I'm not a gamer, but the graphics are very fast for google earth etc - you get wave effects on the sea, and the 3d-buildings are smooth. The windows aero effects are quite nice.

Feels very robust, with good strong hinges. One of the old inspiron hinges broke a few years ago.

90w Power supply is compatible with my older dell laptops.

Minus points (not major issues):

Only 2 USB slots is limiting: D820 has 4. And they're on the right hand side so they can get in the way of a right-handed mouse user. This comes from the way the screen hinges work these days.

Big and heavy, but we keep it at home mostly.
Power button next to the power socket - sometimes press it by mistake when plugging in the power line. Have reconfigured it from shutdown to hibernate now.

I think I should have got the backlit keyboard - a friend has it and it's useful in low-light sitting-room situations.

No disk activity light! I miss this when I'm working on the PC, though admittedly they're a distraction when watching video.

Fan can be a bit noisy, and it switches on and off, so we can't leave it on overnight in a bedroom. Fine for work though - disk very quiet. (There may be some configuration to choose which would reduce the CPU power to avoid the fan coming on.)

Slightly odd consumer-oriented keyboard: the function keys are upside-down, in that you have to press the Function button AND the function key. The default functions are pause/play/rewind etc for media playback, and stuff like screen brightness. Some of these are duplicated with the backlit touch-sensitive buttons above the keyboard, which is a bit pointless.

The Mini really is Mini

Product Uses:
Travel, school work

Review:
I purchased a Mini 10 through the outlet about 9 months ago and I totally love it! It's lightweight, fits in my purse (although I carry it in a protective case) and it works great!

I bought it for school and it's proven to be a blessing. We do a lot of online work in my classes and my Mini allows me to sit in my car, catch the wireless signal on campus, and do homework between classes.

The only real drawback I find with it is that the power cable does not swap out with other Inspiron models. (I also have an Inspiron 6000 - that laptop is about 7 years old!)

The other drawback, though I knew it when I purchased it, is the absence of a cd/dvd player in the laptop itself. I find it cumbersome to have to attach a separate drive to the laptop.

Did I mention that I bought it through the Outlet, fully loaded? I was hesitant at first, as most people are, but I'm REALLY glad I got it. It arrived clean and with all the accessories and materials. You wouldn't know it was a return.

I own 3 Dells... and have been pleased with all of them.

Hope this helps those who are on the fence about a purchase. I'm sure whatever you decide will be the best decision for you! Cheers!

Mini 10v running Ubuntu is fantastic

Product Uses:

Review:
The Mini 10v is a fantastic product! Being a Linux user, I was a bit disappointed with the customized Dell version of Ubuntu Linux, but it isn't too difficult to install whichever breed of Ubuntu you are used to. I'm not running Lucid 10.04 Netbook version with absolutely no problems. Warning: if you are thinking of going down that path, make sure you can re-install the original system before you try!

My advice if you are not currently a Linux user is to install Ubuntu Netbook remix, Hardy 8.10 on an old desktop. It is not the same as the supplied system that you will get on your new Mini 10v, but it is fairly similar, and you can get a feel for Ubuntu without any cost. IMO, it's better and faster than Windows.

I needed to upgrade computers and decided to purchase the Inspiron 11z as a companion to my new Dell Studio XPS 8000. My need for a lap top were reduced to to limited travel. The portability, power, and capacity made it a good choice as a companion computer, allowing me to increase the size of a desk top. I recommend that you max the ram and hard drive. Small screen gets a little getting used to. The key are very good sized and a wireless mouse is also a great addition. You will need an external DVD if you are going to be loading disks on the road. Mini 10 w/ z530 has some special features....

Product Uses:
Travel, coffe house, hook up to hdtv

Review:
1 gb of memory is plenty for running WinXP or Win7- my z530 powered machine is snappy.

Win7 will show almost all of the 1gb in use when it really isn't, due to its caching system. If you have the z520 version it will be much slower, regardless of memory.

All modern netbooks can run Skype or music + a browser (or word processor) + antivirus resident shield on, all at the same time, without any problem. Photoshop, no; DVD conversion or even CD conversion, slow – but that’s why netbooks are second computers for portable use, not primary computers.

Please keep in mind that when your netbook is new, it is often doing a lot of background updating of the Windows files and new users often complain about speed until those updating cycles are finished.

The Mini 10 is special. You can get it with the z530 Atom processor (don’t get the sluggish z520!), which is as fast (1.6 ghz) as the N450/N270 Atoms, but instead of an underpowered GMA 950 (N270) or barely viable GMA 3150 (N450) graphics, it has the remarkable Intel GMA 500 integrated graphics chip which rocks – DirectX and hardware decode of video, which means with the right software it can offload streaming video chores from the microprocessor. It means the difference between jerky and smooth Hulu. To take advantage of the GMA 500 you are probably going to need Windows 7 instead of WinXP – Intel has been supporting the drivers for the GMA 500 slightly better under Windows 7 than WinXP.

Also make sure you download Flash 10.1 beta 3, which now includes support for the GMA 500, or a more current version. Also make sure you have the latest Intel driver (March 2010 or later) for the GMA 500 – Google Intel support and work your way through the menus, or check for device drivers via Dell. (Windows Update won’t snag the current Intel driver and neither will the Control Panel Device Manager program, but Dell is usually good about driver support).

Finally, be careful of your streaming video expectations - you don’t want to run multiple programs when running streaming video if you want stutter-free video, and you need a low-resource demand antivirus program, at least if you run the “memory resident” feature. (I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials, which lets me easily turn the memory resident feature on/off, or Avira Free – McAfee reportedly uses a lot more processing power and memory). Also use lean programs – Google Chrome 4 beta, or Firefox 3.6. You’ll have to experiment with full-screen vs. in-browser, 360p vs. 480p vs. 700p (700p won’t display full-screen on the lower rez netbook screen, but will display on an external monitor).

Finally, the HDMI video output connector on the Mini 10 is INCREDIBLY rare on netbooks. Don't underestimate the usefulness of this feature - it means you can easily hook this up to an external monitor (your tv) to watch videos....

nice, fast, small - great for airline tray tables

Review:
This is a nice, fast, small machine that works well for road warriors. It had all the power I wanted for a reasonable price, and decent battery life. A lot of people seem to like the backlit keyboard, and it is indeed a nice feature.

The only issue I have so far is the optical buttons above the keyboard, to turn off the wireless antenna or eject a disk. They don't seem to function as well as a mechanical or key-operated switch and I wish there was an override -- mainly because the shiny black keyboard looks dusty and when you sweep off the dust with your finger, you inadvertantly turn off the WiFi antenna without realizing it. I've done this far too many times. Sometimes it seems to get "stuck" (stays lit when the WiFi is off) and you have to reboot.
Also, in terms of design I preferred the power cord on the back of the laptop on my old Dell, rather than on the side (which interferes with papers placed alongside the laptop).

Very nice, usable Netbook

Product Uses:
Travel, web browsing/email, software development

Review:
Although it's defined as a "laptop", I consider the 11z as a "netbook" because of its compact size. The high resolution screen is beautiful, and the nearly full-sized keyboard is just fine for me (being a touch typist). The Celeron processor also runs perfectly fine, and I don't see any slowness after replacing McAfee with another light-weight AntiVirus equivalent and doing some minor system tweaking. A very nice machine to use as a netbook.

The only cons that I see, is that the 11z is composed of nearly all black plastic so it doesn't appear as polished or sturdy as some of the other available netbooks on the market. The 3-cell battery life is very limited compared to most other netbooks, going for about 2.5 hrs with WiFi activated and the screen at full brightness. Most netbooks can go for 4+ hours, but then again they are using a much lower-powered CPU with less processing power. The hard drive will also make a strange click-squish sound every once in a while which is a bit disturbing.

The only other thing that bothered me was that the 11z was suppose to come pre-installed with Windows 7 (since it was shipped after the Oct 22nd launch date of Win 7), but it arrived with Vista installed. Now I have to wait for the Win 7 upgrade DVD to arrive by mail in about 10 days, so that was a bit upsetting.

In the end, I'm happy with the 11z and will definitely make good use of it as a netbook travel companion.
