Gaming desktop power - desktop replacement size.
Product Uses:
high-end gaming
Review:
There are a lot of advantages to a small form factor as every owner of a LAN-party-sized gaming computer will tell you. But a gaming desktop that fits into a backpack for a 17-inch notebook?
Yes! That's Alienware X51!
I travel a lot and I need a PORTABLE computer for gaming (kind you can take on an aircraft) but not necessarily a MOBILE one and let's face it - even Alienware notebooks are underpowered in comparison to the desktops and I do not need to pay $3500 for a 10 lbs laptop computer that will be plugged to a 24" monitor 100% of the time anyway.
So, here it is - a real need for as much power as possible in a portable case.
My X51 is the 2nd-gen Core i7, 8GB RAM, GTX 555 version.
My wait time for the computer was about 2 weeks, so no complains there.
After 2 months of use I have not experienced any problems some of the reviewers had, so I guess the kinks are worked out by now (or I am just lucky)... I played Crysis, Skyrim, Path of Exile, Dungeons, Portal, have not had an opportunity to put Fallout 3 and Witcher 2 on it yet (still have to work, LOL)...
Performance is much better than I expected. With the games the experience is like this:
Crysis is functional with the punitive Ultra graphics settings at 1680x1050 (looks amazing, but FPS can drop to teens) works great with all setting set to High and Object Quality and Shader Quality to Ultra (still looks amazing and most people can't tell it form full Ultra anyway) with AA off (I use lower res 1680x1050 for AA feel).
Skyrim is based on an improved circa 2006 XBox360-compatible engine like Fallout 3 and it runs smooth with all settings maxed out, again 1650x1080.
Dungeons is a new game, but it is a strategy so the graphics requirements are not staggering (still choppy on mid-range mobile nVidia accelerators). Here it runs maxed out at full HD 16:10 (1980x1200).
Path of Exile pre-release beta: maxed out at full HD 16:10.
I regret not having time to install Witcher 2 as it is said to provide spectacular graphics with punitive requirements, so it may actually provide a real testing challenge for X51.
Also - even after hours of Crysis the computer does not overheat AT ALL and is reasonably quiet (my 2006 custom built dual 8800GTX can heat up a 300sq ft room on its own while running Crysis on High/Ultra).
What I would really, really, really like to see in this computer is a 400+ Watt PSU and a GTX 660 or even a GTX 670 card. Come on guys - this is a GREAT gaming computer. Let's make it a PERFECT gaming computer that will allow today buyers run everything for the next 4-5 years.

Review:
I upgraded to the i5 (didn't think I would notice the difference if I got the i7) and the ATI Radeon HD video card. I love it for gaming (currently playing Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2), watching DVD's and streaming videos, and general use. Best computer I've ever owned. I think it's a decent value even though you could probably build something of comparable performance for a little bit less $. I like the Windows 7 too, and the computer boots up really quickly too.

Solid performance- basically a mobile desktop
Product Uses:
gamming, movies, work use
Review:
Purchase 11/09. Drive semi truck and wanted a gamming rig thats portable for the truck. This unit dose it. Spec'd it similar to my desktop and been very happy with it so far. Red chassie been very sturdy and has taking the bumps and bruises that come with driving a big rig. Spec'd it with the 2.8 dual core with 6meg cache, dual 260m sli, 4 gig ram 1066 and dual hard drives in raid 0 configuration with top end display running windows 7 home 64bit. Gaming performance been solid. Nothing I play has bogged this thing down nor have I had any user problems or issue with it. Personal complaint though- the display is so shinny and somewhat reflective that use in bright light or outdoor daylight is about impossible. The cooling fans can get loud when system is pushed gamming. On the other hand the back light on keyboard is excellent for night use with out having need for a light on. The internal bluetooth and wireless work well and I've had no issues with their use. Touchpad okay but get a external mouse, those pads are just too picky to use for anything but simple web surfing or video watching. Bottom line- this thing is a portable desktop!

I'm rated in windows at a 7.2 out of 7.9 but the RAM is listed at 7.4.

Area-51 Desktop is amazing!
Product Uses:
Gaming, web surfing, e-mail, movie making
Review:
I received my Area-51 Desktop earlier this week and it is so much better than I could have ever imagined. It Runs very quietly but gets a bit louder when running more hardware intensive software (which is expected). Here are the specs of my machine.
i7 970 processor dual ati radeon hd5970's 6 gigs of ram 1tb hard drive cd/dvd/blu-ray drive I got the silver chasis due to the required 1.1kw PSU.
I was originally upset about having to get the silver chasis but it looks nothing like it does on the website. It is a really DARK gray that almost looks like a gun gray. Trust me it looks awesome.
Cable management is really good, packaging was done extremely well too. Not to mention it shipped 3 weeks earlier than they originally told me it would.
There are also a few goodies that come in the box like a large mouse pad, some stickers, and a black alienware hat. The computer manual looks more impressive than most car manuals that I have seen.
If you can afford this machine, get it!

True Desktop Replacement
Product Uses:
video games (recreational), media entertainment, school work
Review:
To start this review off here are the specs of my ordered laptop: Intel Core i7 720QM 8GB DDR3 RAM Single GDDR5 ATI Radeon™ Mobility HD 5870 512GB Raid 0 Samsung Solid State Drives WideUXGA 1920x1200 RGB LED screen Blu-Ray Optical Drive Intel® Ultimate N WiFi Link 6300 Wireless Card
The Basics: Laptop arrived in May, 2010. When I first opened the box I was surprised at all the extra goodies. The laptop itself was inside a sleeve of velvety material and spotless. When I turned it on it came to life like a dream. I had no problems on start up. The coolest thing was for the first 5-6 minutes there was no sound from the computer other than an electronic whine. I almost thought it wasn't on until I saw the keyboard come alive. Within 10-15 minutes I had everything set up. For the first month I had a few problems: Wireless card refused to connect to secure wireless networks, some unexpected shut downs after put to sleep, some “failure to start Windows." Also one Blue-Screen. No data lost in any of events if saved. After the first month all of the above issues just disappeared. Only battery charging issues now.
Pros/Benefits: -The pairing of the RGB LED screen with the Blu-Ray drive is the best. The 2D Blu-Ray version of James Cameron's Avatar jumped off the screen like it was 3D, but without the glasses. -Keyboard lights are prime for low-light situations and have 4 zones for customization. -Design is utterly cool and sleek despite size (see Cons/Problems) -The Samsung SSDs are an excellent choice if you can afford them. I have gotten an astounding 2hr 50min time out of the battery in low-power mode. The start-up time is about 30-60 seconds from off to log-in screen. -The aluminum case is extremely durable. (see Cons/Problems for more) -For desktop-equivalent mobile computing power, this is your laptop. -The large amount of RAM allows me to do nearly 2 dozen high-intensity activities without any program lag.
Cons/Problems (mostly minor issues): -Screen reflection can be a problem in certain lighting, especially when dirty. -The speakers are standard. The sounds can be warped when typing because of arm placement. -Complete set of ports, but only on the sides. -The media “buttons” can be intermittent with responses, sometimes program restricted. -The lower part of the computer is very thick, some wrist & arm angle problems. -The aluminum case adds lots of weight. -Half of the laptop's base is fan vents so be careful when using on lap. -Consistent problems with battery not charging, likely because of programming to extend battery life. To fix I simply remove the battery while the computer is off and re-insert it and it charges.
Recommendations: -If you buy this computer get some kind of cushion for lap use. A desk of proper height is best. -Don't expect to cart this laptop around everywhere or you'll become lop-sided.
Hope this helps anyone needing details to decide on what to get.

Pros
I almost bought an Inspiron when I found the Studio Slim. I love the versatility it has and of course the speed, reliability, and the cool sleek black design. I live in the middle of nowhere with satelite internet and it works better than any other computer I have put on this connection. I have a 60" wide screen this is connected to with HDMI and talk about awesome!! No, I dont do any online gaming. I would have nothing but a Dell, period.
Cons
I only regret that i did not upgrade to a larger hard drive like 1TB and get the Bluetooth package when I bought this system. I have heard alot of horror stories about Vista. When I bought this computer I didt want to pay xtra for XP. So I thought I would try Vista Home Premium. I love it!! For me XP is the thing of the past now.

Review:
When searching out a new computer after my laptop was fried, I wanted something with power. I am not a gamer, but I do a lot of multitasking for online school work, as well as video editing for pleasure. I didn't even get the very top-of-the-line processor or memory, but I am very pleased with middle selections of customization that I ordered. Great machine. Quiet, except at boot-up. A bit of a space hog on my desk, but that was expected. Cool personalization features, like the green CPU lights. I've had no complaints with Dell customer service in the past when I ordered their Axium mobile device, so I stepped out and ordered this beast for myself. A bit of indulgence on my behalf, but I am confident it will stand up to my yearly challenges. Maybe I'll even get a game in now and then.

I wrote review approx: month ago and was contacted by e-mail about my review and they said they wanted to help with the problems I was having but first they needed more if formation about my computer I sent them everything and as of today 11/7/10 I have not heard from anyone. I've sent additional e-mails asking why have'nt I got back a reply yet still no reply. The following formation listed is the problems I had with my computer. 1. Hard drive crashed 2. Keyboard had to be replaced 3. Proformance problems with keyboard and mouse I was told by Aline Support purchase there software Insurance and they could fix it for an additional $140.00 after I spent over #3000.00 for my system that was there fix why should I have to bye additional Insurance for my computer to be fixed. This computer suppost to be top of the line. While I've have had nothing but bad luck. So I requested them to replace my computer with a dell gaming computer let them sell this one to someone else. Since then here last week they had to replace both my hard drives so that make three hard drives already thats been replace. Something is causing them to go out there fix put two new ones in and that will fix it. NOT whats causing them to go out and why I'm I having proformance problems, My problems not with Dell I should have never let them talk me into getting this junk should have stayed with a Dell system Like I had mine was out of date. I'm not asking for a new Alineware computer to replace this one I just want Dells gaming computer as close as they can to equal to this one. I always had good luck with my Dell Computer it's the Alineware I'm very unhappy with and I would not recommend Alien to anyone my advice it stay with Dell Computers.

Review:
PROS Very fast PC (but I was comparing to my 7 year old PC) and so far very reliable performance. Love the video performance thru the new WMC. Easy setup and the pre-loaded software was good (Skype etc) and the card reader was a nice bonus. The 20inch widescreen monitor that came with it is quite superb (ST2010).
CONS I was expecting a smaller case. The keyboard is a little light-weight and not as well spaced out as previous designs. But perhaps the biggest fault is the lack of USB ports. It's almost criminal!!! You get 4 in the rear of the machine and 2 front facing. Once you've put the monitor, mouse and keyboard in the back that leaves just one - which I've used to plug in a powered 4 port USB hub. The hub can then take the printer, scanner etc. However, some devices don't seem to like the hub and need a direct port so I have stuff permanently plugged into the front 2 USBs which mean the cover is permanently open allowing dust to get to the car reader slots. Not ideal.
Overall Apart from the lack of USBs, this is a stunning PC & monior for the money.

Excellent desktop replacement!
Product Uses:

Review:
I received my new XPS17 four days ago and so far all I can say that it is a real delight to use. The display is crisp, bright and beautiful color rendition. The backlit keyboard is wonderful and I strongly suggest everyone have this feature! Speaking of the keyboard, it is beautifully laid out, is very responsive and quiet.
This machine is FAST with its i7 Intel processor, 8gb or DDR3 memory and its NVIDIA 3gb graphics card. It snaps open pages, brings up Office in a snap and it takes less than two minutes to boot up and get started. Love that!
Built in wireless card has tremendous range so that will surprise you if you are currently using a g wifi card.
The sound is awesome! It is clear, has real depth and it is loud. If you love movies, music and need to watch tv on your unit like I do, this sound system is the real deal and perfect for you. My unit has a blueray player so I can't wait to play a blueray movie to see it perform.
My only gripe with the unit is that contrary to the website which is a little confusing, this unit does NOT support NVIDIA Optimus so you are lucky to have up to 2-1/2hrs of battery time (with the 9cell and fully charged, just running IE and Outlook). That was disappointing.
This unit does NOT support WIDI or Push2TV because the i7 unit's chipset simply isn't the one for that purpose. If you want to share display wirelessly with your HDTV you will need to find another way.
Wish we had a pc video port out but the HDMI is very nice and it should support 3D movies on a 3D tv. The numerous USB ports are wonderful and convenient.
The XPS17 is worth a close look because it is fully upgradeable. The styling is definitely not flashy and not exactly pretty but the forward hinge, the LED lit xps logo and keyboard set against the matte charcoal keyboard is very nice and classy.
Strongly suggest this unit to anyone looking for a performance desktop replacement!

Excellent compact desktop with high performance
Product Uses:
software development, video editing and photo editing, research using the internet, audio editing
Review:
This is an excellent high performance desktop. The Intel i7 quad processor with hyperthreading is very fast, but it doesn't need the huge heat sinks that older quad processor chips required. The case itself is not intended for rapid hardware changes - it uses screws to hold components in place, and it's a tight fit for my fingers to make changes such as pushing in extra SATA cables. There is only 1 open slot (perhaps you could add a modem?). You can add a second hard disk and a second DVD/CD drive, but that's it. I've expanded the disk storage beyond this by adding eSATA and USB drives (eSATA is about twice as fast as USB on this machine). I like the power button on top along with two USB ports and mic and headphone jacks. The ATI graphics card is powerful enough for the engineering work I do (though I would have prefered an nVidia card in order to use their CUDA library). With 2 disk drives you could reconfigure the machine for RAID, but I haven't wanted to try this. At the moment I have about 7 Tbyte of storage on this machine (2 internal drives, 4 external) with 2 DVD drives, and it is very stable so I am very happy.

However being used to XP and getting used to WINDOWS 7 was hard at first due to lack of detailed information on how to transfer some of my data. I particularly struggled as windows 7 does not have outlook express any longer. It is called windows live mail and transferring all of my old e mails and contacts was difficult due to lack of info in the windows help section. Perfect Desktop Replacement
Product Uses:
professional photographer, tethered photography, image processing
Review:
Pros: Power and Performance at a great price point.
Cons: Not really intended for "lap top" use. Plus, the 500Gb (7200rpm) drives bring the WEI down to a paltry 5.9. Upgrading the system drive to SSD brought it back up to 7.2.
If you are looking for a true replacement for your aging desktop, then look no further than the XPS 17. With the i7 processor and 8Gb of RAM (or better), you would hardly know that you were working on a mobile platform.
With great performance comes the need for great power consumption. While the 9-cell battery will keep you going in the short term (depending on various settings), the eye will always be on the lookout for the next wall socket.
The only points that I wish were better was for a 90 degree power plug and a slot fed multi-disk drive.
While I do work with this on my lap, I am constantly worried about putting too much pressure on the power plug and breaking the connector inside of the computer. And with all the grabbing and moving I do with this monster, I am constantly hitting the button to eject the disk tray.
Overall, I am very happy with this big, heavy monster. It does exactly what I need it to do with enough 'oomph' to spare.

Okay so I had a compaq for so long....It was terrible for games. I'm very big on WoW and with my compaq I had to play it on rhe worst settings and it still lagged....ughh. Well I got this computer for christmas and OMG! This computer is amazing, I now am able to play on the best settings with VERY minimal lag. On starcraft 2 I recall no lag. With WoW like I said very minimal. This computer is amazing for the price. Everything a gamer could want.

Review:
I have simply fallen in love with XPS 8300. It reached 6 days before the actual date of delivery. I have opted for 8 GB RAM, half-mini wirless data card, i7 2600 processor and all other configurations. CPU is soundless. Its' look is stunnigly beautiful (black front panel and white box). 18.5 inches monitor is too good but it would have been better if I opted for LED. System came with dell mutimedia speaker system (promotional offer). But, I am surprized to find the monitor without power cord. I already lodged a complaint. Hoping to get a response at the earliest. I would recommend this product.
