Excellent compact desktop with high performance

Product Uses:
software development, video editing and photo editing, research using the internet, audio editing

Review:
This is an excellent high performance desktop. The Intel i7 quad processor with hyperthreading is very fast, but it doesn't need the huge heat sinks that older quad processor chips required. The case itself is not intended for rapid hardware changes - it uses screws to hold components in place, and it's a tight fit for my fingers to make changes such as pushing in extra SATA cables. There is only 1 open slot (perhaps you could add a modem?). You can add a second hard disk and a second DVD/CD drive, but that's it. I've expanded the disk storage beyond this by adding eSATA and USB drives (eSATA is about twice as fast as USB on this machine). I like the power button on top along with two USB ports and mic and headphone jacks. The ATI graphics card is powerful enough for the engineering work I do (though I would have prefered an nVidia card in order to use their CUDA library). With 2 disk drives you could reconfigure the machine for RAID, but I haven't wanted to try this. At the moment I have about 7 Tbyte of storage on this machine (2 internal drives, 4 external) with 2 DVD drives, and it is very stable so I am very happy.

I Love It So Much, I Bought The Company

Product Uses:
education, entertainment, internet, word processing, desktop publishing, photograph printing

Review:
I have owned Dell Computers for about 10 years, and this is my third laptop. I am disabled and going to school over the internet. I am an aspiring photographer, and that is what I am studying in school. I needed a "Laptop that would replace a desktop". The Studio XPS16 is reliable and secure enough with it's Windows 7 operating system and McAfee Security Suite, that I could attend school over the internet and get my assignments to my instructors fast and worry free. The Facial Recognition is VERY COOL...AND it prevents anyone but me from logging on to my laptop, and you can use it to store user names and passwords for your facorite websites too. I also needed something that was powerfull enough to run film scanners, lightscribe drives, and a number of other high powered periferals. Again, The Studio XPS16 fulfilled all of my needs. With it's HDMI, 2 USB Ports, USB eSATA Port and Card Reader, I can download all of my photographs very quickly, I can run all of my periferals, and create a fast backup of my entire system with an external Hard Drive connected to the eSATA port. Drive space was also very importrant to me. RAW picture files are very large, and photographers rarely like to delete a photo...so they add up quickly, and so does the space they take up. The Studio XPS16, the perfect choice here as well. The 500GB Hard drive with "Freefall Sensor" allows my plenty of space to store all of my photographs and run all of my very large programs. Sometimes, I take my laptop outside with me on my wheelchair. The 'Freefall Sensor" gives me the peice of mind, that if it falls off of my lap, my data will be okay. It has 8BG of RAM, so it can run the biggest, most RAM intenstve programs with ease.
Overall, I must say, that this is the best laptop/notebook computer that I ahve ever owned. I would recommend the Studio XPS16 to anyone looking for a quailty, high end laptop at a very affordable price, to but one of these. I was so happy with this, MY THIRD LAPTOP PURCHASE, and FIFTH MAJOR DELL PURCHASE OVERALL...That I bought 100 shares of DELL company stock to add to my portfolio.

Great Company, Great Services, So-So Product...

Product Uses:
Travel, desktop replacement

Review:
I've had the Studio XPS 13 up and running for less than a month now. However, prior to using it I had to install a newer BIOS version and had to have Tech Support replace mother board and a few other items. I'm hoping it doesn't start heating up again....
