Decent home use utilitarian laptop

Product Uses:
home business, Travel, personal collaboration, web surfing, videos

Review:
A good laptop, easy setup out of the box, wireless works great. The Dell offered backup web service was a bit cludgey (instructions not so great). Biggest drawback on the laptop to-date (after 3 weeks of use) is the touchpad mouse (seems to freeze up on occasion), and the lack of a hard-drive indicator light (to tell when the PC is working vs idle). The light is particularly an issue - Dell needs to add one back into the basic design package!

I bought this computer DELL STUDIO 1555 in Decmeber 2009, and I am happy to use this laptop with advanced features. Good performance, ease of use and handy.

The only drawback I am seeing is when I am closing the laptopn without out locking or shutting down, the system goes to stand by mode, which never used to happen with my previous laptop. I am not sure whether this is a feature but i did not liked that. APart from that everythig is good.

Especially support is tooooooo good. Whenever i call dell support I used to get a quick response and resolution. This is pretty awesome.

GREAT LAPTOP!

Product Uses:
home, Travel, use for mobile tech jobs

Review:
PROS: BIG screen! This is a WIDE 1600x900, my other laptop is a 17.3" also... MSI GX-710-400A, which is a 1920x1200 matt finish. I put Windows 7 Pro 32 on it because I have software that won't run on 64 and I use the XP Mode VM. I had to go to Intel to get the video driver, all other drivers from Dell Win7 64 downloads, and MAKE SURE you install the Management Interface Engine, or you will be missing a driver. I like the fact that this laptop just smudges, my MSI shows EVERY fingerprint!

CONS: The specs show 1333MHz RAM, however the RAM in mine is clocked only at 1066MHz, which is an i3 limitation... Dell should revise their specs. I just looked it up on Intel and found the limitation. NO REGRETS ON MY PURCHASE! NO BLUE LEDs :(. I have always disliked the glossy screens, and this one is no exception..... WHY DO THE COMPANIES USE THEM? NONE of my customers like them either!!!

OTHER: This is MUCH faster than my MSI (2.3GHz Turion) and has many more advantages than my MSI (which was over $1200 new). I really like this laptop and so does my wife... I guess she is the next one to get one. This laptop scores 4.5 on the Windows Experience for those who track that ambiguous tool. I installed a WD Scorpio Black 250GB in mine to get desktop performance (7200 RPM).

I am a beta tester/ (white-hat) hacker and can twist systems inside out.... this laptop was an easy tweak! I have 18+ years of experience as a tech / white-hat hacker and I have seen TONS of junk come across my bench (especially the Highly Pathetic brand) and this one is not even a consideration for the bad / junk/ inept catagory.

GETTING ONE OF THESE IS NOT A MISTAKE! Just make sure you get a HUGE laptop bag for this... it barely fit mine!

Good Basic Laptop

Bought this for my son as we have already two dell laptops in the house that have been very reliable. Alas we had a failure within 6 weeks of purchase. The hard disk failed and with no recovery CD for Windows 7 repair would be hard so an e-mail to Dell resulted in an engineer coming round and fitting a new hard drive! All this on the standard warranty. Laptop now its normal self. Well built, does what it says on the tin! Also good to know good back up service if it does go wrong! Please please though, put the recovery disks back in the box!

Excellent laptop, but not perfect

Product Uses:
general home web use, software development

Review:
My 3-year-old Inspiron 1720 started acting up, so I got the 17R. The 1720 was my favorite computer ever -- large screen, good sound, excellent media control buttons and keyboard with separate number pad, etc.

Compared to the 1720, the 17R's aspect ratio is wider (1600x900 vs 1440x900), letting you see more across the screen. The screen seems VERY bright to me, but the color balance leans towards blue and looks washed out compared to the color on an external Dell monitor. (See picture.)

The 17R's keyboard is its biggest drawback. The travel of the keys feels much shorter than on the 1720, almost like a "chiclet" keyboard. There does not appear to be a Ctrl-Break key!! As a programmer, I need that to interrupt the execution of a program I'm working on. But the worst thing is that the Function keys are labeled with dark print on black keys, making them impossible to identify without bright light. I just can't understand the reason for that.

Unlike the separate media keys on the 1720, the 17R's are on the Function keys, so you can choose to have them as the default and hold down another key to use the Function keys or vice-versa. Either way is an inconvenience.

The touchpad on the 17R is about the size of an iPhone's screen (much larger than the 1720's) and with its multi-touch, lets you do a lot of neat things.

The matte finish on the 1720's case doesn't show fingerprints while the shiny case of the 17R is a fingerprint magnet.

Value-wise, the 17R is unbeatable. It has a 500GB hard drive vs 160GB in my 1720. It has a more powerful CPU, an eSata port, and costs less than 1/3rd what the 1720 did three years ago.

Good Affordable Laptop

Product Uses:
home business use

Review:
If your needs are greater than a tablet can provide, but compact size and light weight are important, this product will fit your needs well.

This laptop provides a full keyboard, generous monitor and yet remains small and lightweight.

Having owned several laptops made by other manufacturers, an adjustment was necessary to become familiar with Dell software and differences. Generally, the adjustments were made fairly easily and support was very helpful, when needed.

Good product.

She Loves It

Product Uses:
home use, Travel

Review:
My wife wanted a laptop and was focusing on netbooks. I started the research process and was unimpressed with most offering 1 GB Ram, Windows 7 starter, atom processors, etc.

Came back to Dell and found the Inspiron 11z. Ordered it with Intel® Pentium™ SU4100, 2 GB Ram, N-wireless card, Bluetooth and Windows 7 office.

She loves it! The right size, responsive, fast, vibrant screen resolution and very good mouse pad (previous reviews regarding bad mouse pad design must have been addressed...no problems here!). The 6 cell battery provides lengthy power away from the plug.

A little bit bigger than a netbook but still easy travel size and much bigger on features.

This is the 6th Dell computer we've owned and 3rd laptop. We each have our own Dell desktops and we each have our own laptops. We have no complaints with any of our systems and would recommend the Inspiron 11z. She Loves it!

Inspiron 11Z

Review:
The plus sides:Sleek, simple and clean design good keyboard with great feel and response; good screen quality and clarity; very slim and lightweight; go for the 6 cell batteryand highest spec model if you want to use this fantastic laptop on the go; power cable illuninates with a suttle blue led lit ring; FANTASTIC sound with built in speakers; also the air vents have been designed right in the centre of the bottom - vertically, so that means if you put it on your lap, the vents should not get covered by your left and right legs whilst using it. The processor is fast (go for the 4MB RAM). Does not over heat.

NOW - the much slated mouse pad - I personally think its the best mouse pad I have come across. It's multi functions can be dissabled or enabled if certain aspect dont work for you.

You can buy a seperate DVD/CD player/writer for just over £30.00 if you shop around. I think LG are good for this purpose. Obviously Dell sell their own if you choose that option.

Overall a good lightweight, fabulous design and very much delivers the goods with graphics and all other daily operational needs.

I recently did a perfect upgrade to Windows 7, as ordered from Dell. Windows 7 works very well and I am very much satisfied and happy that I upgraded.

Cons: I would have loved a backlit LED keyboard, but other than that, there are NO real cons with this superb laptop/notebook!

Enjoy!

I wanted a replacement laptop for my 6 year old Inspiron 6000 and decided to go with the Inspiron 11z. I was not disappointed.

The Inspiron 11z is a fine looking product (cherry red). The screen size is perfect for my needs and the picture is amazing.

The full keyboard is great to use and as for the touchpad- no problem, Why all the fuss.
Movies through the HDMI output are just great. The picture is so clear and the audio perfect.

Processor speed is impressive and all applications so far are running very smoothly.

As you can tell i am more than happy with the purchase. No regrets.

XPS10 Tablet

Product Uses:
for home & travel hope to use instead of laptop

Review:
I've had my XPS 10 Tablet for a week and just love it. It is easy too use with everything at your fingertips.
The cons:1. The Flash player is not compatible which there are few of my favorite sites I can't view and must use my laptop or PC. 2. Unable to pin to the desktop, I can only pin to the taskbar or to the Start window. 3. Unable to customize the color for each tile on the start page. 4. My Verizon Broadband is not compatible, have to use my smart phone as a Hotspot where WiFi is not available which means it needs to be plugged in or the battery runs down real quick. 5. There isn't a respectable number of accessories available to choose from for the XPS 10 Tablet and that includes 1 case and 1 stylus pen that is for the Latitude XFR, both the case and the stylus have very bad reviews which means I won't be ordering them. 6. The mini usb port and the power port are placed at the bottom (tablet in the horizontal position) of the tablet which makes it awkward when the power and usb ports are in use. Recommend for future tablets that they be placed someplace else. Also it would have been nice to have 1 normal size usb port. Other then all I mentioned I am happy with my tablet. This is my learning tablet this one will tell me what to look for when I need to purchase another one.
