Review:
This is my 4th Dell Laptop purchase. Overall, Dell laptops are easy to use, have excellent service and are reliable.

As for the studio 17, I am not as happy with the design of this system as i have been with my past systems. the media buttons, including the cd/dvd eject button, are unlit and very difficult to see until you hit a button. they are also very sensitive and have to be reset by removing the battery. The cord on the system comes out of the right side, rather than from the back, making it awkward at times. The cord is also lit when the machine is off, which can be annoying.

There have been the typical issues with this machine but they have been handled quickly and efficiently by Dell Service.

I would like to see Dell add in a Trade-In program, as I would really like to switch to another model since i am not happy with the design of this one.

Dell thought of everything! The M11x is AWESOME!

Product Uses:
internet, video, Gaming, desktop publishing

Review:
This is my first experience with Alienware and I have to say that I'm highly impressed. I own many Dell products, and while they're all good, I wouldn't say that any of them are out of the ordinary. That is until I owned the Alienware M11x.

The first thing I noticed when turning it on was that there was nothing installed on the machine that I wouldn't want. No bloat ware, no anti-virus, nothing that I'd have to uninstall.

I bought the machine primarily as a "netbook" for my wife, but being an avid gamer, I wanted something that could also be used at LAN parties and such. We also bought an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc... as we weren't sure that we'd like the 11.6" display for every day use. Much to our surprise the 11.6" display seems larger then we expected and it is the crispest image I've ever seen. There are a number of reviews that might slightly complain about the reflective nature of the display, I was of the same opinion for about 20 minutes. I think the "glass like" display enhances the image even more, and it only takes a few minutes to position yourself so that it doesn't reflect over and above the image.

The laptop's outer shell is very well constructed, with everything placed exactly where I would put it. With powered USB ports (powered even when the computer is off) a battery charge indicator (also available when the computer is off) and lots of pretty lights, I couldn't ask for more.

I'm one that likes lights on a computer, but was a little wary of these before getting the computer. It seemed like there might be too many. But again I was wrong. The lighting is really cool. With 5 configurable zones, not only configurable to be one color, but you can even set it up to rotate through all, not sure how many, but like 20 colors. They can be set to be constant, morphing, flashing, all 5 zones independent of each other. And then you can also set different colors in each zone depending on the application that is running. So if I don't want the wife or kids running something, I set all the zones to flashing red and they get the message instantly :)

The keyboard and touch pad are nice as well. Someone mentioned that the keyboard was a little childish. I'd' have to disagree and say that's it's just Alienware style. Fun and not too over the top, just enough...

Last but not least, the performance is phenomenal! It ran all of the Call of Duties we play just as we would expect them to on our desktop PCs. The 7300u process also over-clocks quite well. Switching between the graphics cards was very easy, and batter life far exceeded our expectations utilizing either card. And unlike other laptops I have, it stayed quite cool, even after hours of gaming.

Well, I could go on and on about this laptop, but I think you get the picture. I'd give it 5 stars and recommend the purchase to ANYONE, even if you're not looking for a gaming machine. It's just AWESOME.

I Love It So Much, I Bought The Company

Product Uses:

Review:
I have owned Dell Computers for about 10 years, and this is my third laptop. I am disabled and going to school over the internet. I am an aspiring photographer, and that is what I am studying in school. I needed a "Laptop that would replace a desktop". The Studio XPS16 is reliable and secure enough with it's Windows 7 operating system and McAfee Security Suite, that I could attend school over the internet and get my assignments to my instructors fast and worry free. The Facial Recognition is VERY COOL...AND it prevents anyone but me from logging on to my laptop, and you can use it to store user names and passwords for your facorite websites too. I also needed something that was powerfull enough to run film scanners, lightscribe drives, and a number of other high powered periferals. Again, The Studio XPS16 fulfilled all of my needs. With it's HDMI, 2 USB Ports, USB eSATA Port and Card Reader, I can download all of my photographs very quickly, I can run all of my periferals, and create a fast backup of my entire system with an external Hard Drive connected to the eSATA port. Drive space was also very importrant to me. RAW picture files are very large, and photographers rarely like to delete a photo...so they add up quickly, and so does the space they take up. The Studio XPS16, the perfect choice here as well. The 500GB Hard drive with "Freefall Sensor" allows my plenty of space to store all of my photographs and run all of my very large programs. Sometimes, I take my laptop outside with me on my wheelchair. The 'Freefall Sensor" gives me the peice of mind, that if it falls off of my lap, my data will be okay. It has 8BG of RAM, so it can run the biggest, most RAM intenstve programs with ease.
Overall, I must say, that this is the best laptop/notebook computer that I ahve ever owned. I would recommend the Studio XPS16 to anyone looking for a quailty, high end laptop at a very affordable price, to but one of these. I was so happy with this, MY THIRD LAPTOP PURCHASE, and FIFTH MAJOR DELL PURCHASE OVERALL...That I bought 100 shares of DELL company stock to add to my portfolio.

What an excellent product. I feel sorry for the people that buy MacBooks. I've tried the Mac OS and there is nothing to compare to the Speed of the XPS 16 with Windows 7. The laptop came with Vista and although I was never a Vista fan, I decided to go with it, since Dell offered the free upgrade to Windows 7. Windows 7 and the Studio XPS 16 are lightning fast! I've been a committed Dell customer for years and there is a reason for that. I'm a business owner so reliabilty and expandability is very important. No other computer I have ever used has been as reliable as my Dell computers have been. I don't have to buy a computer as often because my Dell systems last and last. I'm on my 3rd Dell PC and my 3rd Dell laptop and I'll be a customer for years to come because of Dell's stability!

Best Byte for the Buck...!

Product Uses:
desktop publishing, to keep track of my moms health., making and editing videos, to take with me where-ever i go., wi-fi the world...

Review:
The Best Value is what it is all about for me, and this machine is exceptional..

About moi:
- I started learning about computers in 1967 and continue to thrive with them to this day. An extension of the human mind, a means to free up time for one to be more creative, productive and prosperous.. which in the end is up to the indvidual and how any computer is made use of.

With this Inspiron 1750 portable, is as close to the functiality of the desktop useability one could find.

Pro's:
- I chose the Pentium 2.1ghz, dual processor, with 800fsb and 4gigs of ram min, however a 4gig readyboost locked in, makes up for a difference between 64 and 32 bit os.

- It setup and registered quickly and few updates were required, happy to see, as is what is expected of a new machine.

- Bluetooth is a must and the reason there are no more legacy com and lpt ports as they are available through the bluetooth funtion, like mouse, keyboard, mp3, phone you name it, all going bluetooth, and not a plug-in at all needed for any of those phericals.

- If you still need to go usb, that's cool, as simply plug in an express device to convert to 4 more usb portals, and or just about any other connection one needs, there also.

- the 7 in 1 mem card reader, is another plus and is well placed and located as are is just about everything on this machine.

- Recording and burn quality is second to none even when set on "good", with better and best .. still above that..

- The hdef audio and hd-wide screen is incredible, and be sure to plug in external speakers that can keep up with the quality built into this machine.

- One can plug in an external monitor and or projector, and be like at the movies... in.. credible.

Con's:
- Haven't found any yet, however, I'll keep looking..

Possiblities:
- Unlimited.
- If you got the vista version with the windows 7 update, then try to have some fun, and create a dual-boot with the 2 os's, and or think of what one may have laying around that could be plugged in and or incorporated into this fabulous piece of engineering..
- Backup, and don't be afraid, to try new things, you'll be surprised, what can be done with any pc.

Enjoy yours, now go buy one...lol....

Good laptop - early days

Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, Finances, email, music and photo editing and storage, desktop publishing

Review:
I purchased my laptop a month ago, so it's early days to say much about it. The purchase and service and delivery were all efficient and prompt.

I really wanted a purple laptop but now realise the purple is on the lid which is the back of the screen when the laptop is in use. So you don't get to enjoy the colour unless you're carrying it around (without a case)... and mine stays on my desk pretty much all the time.
That said, the system seems to be fast, the set up after unpacking it was quick and easy. The camera seems to work well and of course it has plenty of memory. I had considered the Studio but am happy with the Inspiron. So far I have not used it for much other than email and web access and have not put it to the test with multiple applications on the go yet.

When I removed my Alienware M17x from the box, I was blown away. The computer was in a protective cloth sleeve, which tells me the builders took tremendous care in making sure each and every one of my requests for my computer was met, and the utmost care was taken in shipping.

When I booted it up for the first time, I was blown away. The solid state hard drive is worth the extra money, people. Not only is it far faster than a 7200rpm hard drive, but it is far more durable. It will last and last and last, no matter what environment it is exposed to.

I LOVE facial recognition. It is much easier than a password. All I have to do is sit down in front of the computer and it will recognize its owner. And nobody else. That's security.

The video is incredible. I went for the top of the line Crossfire card, and it was a wise move. CyberLink plays my DVDs in stunning 1080p HD, and I can't wait to purchase my first Blu-Ray to be totally amazed.

I use an external mouse, and I am very happy to say the touch pad shuts itself off when the mouse is plugged in. It eliminates redundancy and any chance you might point to the wrong item.

The anondized aluminum is classy all the way. Lunar Silver is the color you should pick if you are building your own unit. And I love the four USB ports, eSata, HDMI, PCI video, and the memory card slot, allowing me to use inexpensive SDHC cards to store large amounts of data quickly.

Is it heavy? Yes. But I spent five years lugging around an Inspiron 9200, which had a 17-inch screen. You will not complain about the weight when you discover the battery life this powerhouse has.

The AC adapter was a bit bulky, but I'm not complaining in the least. It has a far longer cord than any other adapter I've used, including numerous Dell models, and I bought a second so I always will have one to travel with in my spacious Alienware Orion backpack.

The backpack is worth every penny. Buy it. It will be $100 well invested. Also invest in an extra battery. It will easily fit in the bag and not take up much space.

In short, if you have a budget of $5,000 or above to spend on a computer, go with Alienware. You won't be disappointed in the least.

Excellent machine - just a few niggles

Product Uses:
audio and video production, desktop publishing

Review:
The PC is well-built, well-designed and quiet. It does everything a PC of this spec should. The selection of front panel card slots and connectors is very well thought-out. Dell's service was excellent and delivery was fast.

Windows 7 64-bit is excellent. Very stable and highly compatible with *almost* all accessories. We had one Canon scanner which did not have a 64-bit driver available for it. Everything else just worked. I use this for production of a podcast called the Earshot Creative Review http://earshotcreative.com and the PC handles the Adobe audio production sofware elegantly.

The PC comes bundled with a few pieces of junkware which you may want to delete. Unfortunatley Dell does not supply the Windows installation discs so you can't easily do a clean install from scratch. Given the price of a CD this seems a silly compromise. The junkware includes antivirus and online backup products. Useful tools but we'd rather not use those particular ones thank you very much.

The system is also shipped assuming you want Internet Explorer and other Microsoft products as your defaults. If you want a different browser you have to download one or dig deep for the Windows browser selection dialog.

The PC looks great but is rather deep from front to back compared with other PCs and this may be an issue if you have to accommodate it inside a desk compartment as we do.

The soundcard and/or the controlling software adds some kind of automatic adjustment to the audio which appears to be undefeatable. If sound quality is important to you I'd recommend a third-party soundcard.

Finally, there is only 1 PCI bus inside. The other slots are the newer PCIe format which is a different standard. Check you don't need to install loads of PCI extras.

The new combo Solid State Harddrive and regular dirve takes a little getting used to, but having the operating system on a SSD drive is amazing. Even large programs like Photoshop open up very quickly. I am keeping all of my images on the second drive (the D drive)but do have other data on the SSD drive (C drive) along with the operating system.

Dell indicates that the ports are 3.0, actually only four ports are 3.0--two in front and two in back; you will know them by their blue color. It would have been far better if all four of the 3.0 ports had been put in the back, attached to the motherboard. I have a 2T external drive with a 3.0 UBS cable, but it will not move data at the 3.0 speed when it is attached to one of the front 3.0 ports. (The front ports are connected to the motherboard by a cable, whereas the rear ports on directly on the motherboard.) It is possible that smaller devices with 3.0 capability will function at 3.0 speed using the front 3.0 ports, I don't have any to try.

All in all, it is a fine machine!

Laptop is beautiful, sleek, and fast. The screen resolution is nice and sharp. I love that the keyboard can light up too.

I had issues with the DVD drive. It would light up but the drive was not detected by the system. While on hold with Dell support, I plugged in my smartphone to recharge and miraculously, the drive became detectable! Next issue is the WiFi. It is not very reliable. I have to restart the computer for it to reconnect, happens a few times a week. I have several other devices and computers and have not had so much trouble with WiFi connection stability before. Also, when I boot the system, I often get a black screen and have to reboot. I wonder if Windows 8 isn't the problem.

I was also disappointed that a lot of programs like Quicktime and my Sims 3 game, (reason I decided to go with a high performance computer) are not yet compatible with Windows 8. I should have done my homework first, so check your compatibility for programs before buying. Am sorely tempted to downgrade to Windows 7.

I shopped around for this computer for a while and I found it - NEW - on sale at HHGregg for $500 in the middle of November 2012. (The price actually increased for the Black Friday sale - go figure!) This one is a 17R w/i5 processor, 8G RAM and a 1T hard drive. It also has 4 USB 3.0 ports, DVD burner, and came with Windows 7 Home Premium. I'm in the education profession, and I've heard horror stories about Windows 8, so that sealed the deal, and may also account for the low price. I run the full Adobe CS5.5, Autodesk MAYA, Quickbooks Professional, etc. and I still can't believe how fast it is. This was the best investment I've ever made in technology. I really LOVE this machine!
