XPS 8300 Physical Design not up to XPS Standards
Product Uses:
streaming video, Gaming, working with pictures and video files.
Review:
I purchased the XPS 8300 in Dec 2011 as a replacement for my XPS 410 system. I have no beef with the performance of the system which is outstanding and for that reason I would recommend it to a friend with some qualifications.
The hardware (in particular the case design) is not nearly up to par with the previous XPS Desktops. It's smaller, more cramped inside, must remove screw in order to remove the side. Changing out or adding a hard drive is a real pain (must remove video card in order to remove the hard drive cage). My biggest design complaint concerns the plastic front with the little flip down and sliding component covers. Asthetically it's pleasing, but from a functionality standpoint it's a boo boo. For instance, the flip down doors will only accomodate an additional CD/DVD unit, nothing else. If you install a trayless Hard Drive hot swappable unit (as I did in my XPS 410) the flip cover slot is not large enough to allow the HD unit door to open much less insert a hard drive, therefore no more hot swap hard drives.
Previous XPS desktop units were tall, bold looking and solid as a rock with easy latch door access and room to work. The XPS 8300 has a somewhat cheaper look and feel, more difficult to access internal components and not nearly as accomodating to upgrade.
Pro: If you are buying it for performace with no intention of ever adding components or otherwise upgrading then it's a super unit, quiet and fast.
Con: Case design is a bust. I just wish it was packaged in my old XPS 410 case.

XPS 8300 - A Story of "Not Quite..."
Review:
Overall, the system has a clean look and offers a good solution at a fair price for the average user. However, the power user should take note of the following issues:
1) The Dell 1501 wireless N card in fact will NOT be able to see N networks that are 5ghz; it should work fine for N networks on the 2.4ghz spectrum. Do not waste your money on this upgrade if you have a 5ghz network as I did.
2) The PSU is poor - although rate 460W, there is only 1 cord to direct to your GPU if it need supplemental power. And since the PSU has 3 separate 12v rails with ratings of 18A, 16A, and 8A, you may have trouble supporting even a mid-range GPU unit (such as the GTX 460, which will not work in this system despite requiring only a 450W PSU).
3) Expandability is weak - 4 RAM slots and only 1 PCIe x16 slot make expandability a concern.
Overall, this system is good for casual users but is insufficient for anyone with performance needs.

Loving my new XPS 8300
Product Uses:
Video Editing, graphic design, general web browsing
Review:
I'm coming from an XPS 600 system that I bought in Dec-2005. The XPS 600 was such a reliable machine I decided to go with an XPS model again. I shopped around for alternatives on a performance desktop, but I was not impressed with the other manufacturers out there.
PROS: Whisper quiet! Seriously, it's freaking my wife out how quiet it is compared to our old PC. The Sandy Bridge is wicked fast. I like the mid-tower case size. After coming from the 600 I like the smaller case size. The top mounted USB ports are very convenient.
CONS: As mentioned in other reviews, the mid-tower case is cramped on expansion space. The 3.5 drive bay cage will only hold two drives. I'm having to mount my data drive in the 2nd optical 5.25 bay since I went with the performance RAID 0 option. However, I realize this is a trade-off. If I wanted expansion room, I would have bought the 9100.
Overall, I am VERY pleased with my purchase decision. I waited the extra month for the Sandy Bridge fix to come through because I wanted a powerful processor in the mid-tower form factor and this fits the bill perfectly.
As mentioned earlier I shopped around to all the big-name desktop shops: Falcon NW, iBuyPower, CyberPower, etc. Either they were overpriced or they just slap parts together. Dell is where you get an engineered system that looks good. I really like the case/bezel design. It looks better than the monster grey/silver towers offered by the others.

New XPS 8300 with i7
Product Uses:
photo editing, work from home
Review:
Just got my new pc today, Took it out of the box, pluged it in and it wouldn't boot. Got 4 beep warning. While on the phone, waiting for tech support, I decided to open up the case and check to make sure the ram was installed correctly. It had come loose while in shipment. I reinstalled it and by the time tech support came on the phone, the pc was up and running. The tech support person was very helpfull and stayed on the phone with me to run a few tests just to make sure all was ok. He even waited on the phone while the tests were going on and then had me start-up the data backup so I could make a set of backup discs. He didn't have to do that, but simply wanted me to be assured that if there were any problems, they were there to help. I have too say, the tech support was great. I have built over 15 pc's and this is the first pc I purchased from a Dell. I was a bit concerned about it not booting up, but now that it's running I think this is a great pc. It is very fast and so quiet, you don't even know it's running. The thing is only 2 feet from me and I can't even hear it. While the case was open I noticed that there are extra cables for another hard drive and for another DVD drive or blueray drive. There is plenty of room in the case for anything I will ever put in it. I don't play games on my pc, but do alot of photo editing. With the new i7 and with 8 gig of ram, this is all a person needs. If you are looking for a great pc, this is the one to buy. It was actually less than buying it from Best Buy and got 3 year warranty and 2 years of Mcafee and also got Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier.

Upgrading irritations XPS 8300
Review:
A fine machine that would deserve 5* but for difficulty in upgrading its innards. Try to install a second hard drive - (1) to get at the SATA connection on the motherboard the entire video card rear support bracket and video card itself need to be removed with risk of damage to connections and motherboard. With the SATA sockets so innacessible why not send the machine out with a spare cable already fitted? (2) Then the primary HDD and its support bracket have to be fully removed to screw in the second drive. Why not fit slide-in plastic caddies for the drives?
Installing a second optical drive would be just as tiresome.
Pity such a fine machine has these irritations that could have been eliminated at minor cost and thought.

My Awesome Dell XPS 8300

Review:
This computer is flawless. I've only had a few different computers in my life but this desktop is insanely awesome. It does everything I want plus more. I put it through stress tests to see how the i7 processor(running at 3.4GHz) and the RAM(12 gigs) hold up. I hyave never frozen up. I play high memory/high graphics games. to give you an idea of the power...I can run Crysis(a potentially computer crashing video game) and Crysis 2(the sequel) simultaneously and still open Microsoft word, and google chrome. This thing is way more than I imagined.
It also has the blue ray and Radeon HD graphics which are amazing.
This computer is going to last me a long time, and I have already gotten one of my friends to buy a new one. He loves his as well.

I bought an XPS 8300 a couple weeks ago. This computer is the best Ive owned thus far! the i7 Processor is super fast, I can upload everything I want in a split second. I have 1.5 TB, so theres plenty of room for music, games, and all my school work. I like to play games, and the graphics card is pretty decent, upgradeable of course, but decent to start with. I can play my favorite game on High graphics and normally it takes an hour and a half to download, the XPS 8300 downloaded AND installed it in less than 23 MINUTES!!! Overall a good purchase,

1. Full success loading Windows Office 2002. Everything works (outlook, power point, even access), and the license validated fully. 2. Success with all other XP era applications. 3. They tell me VB6 and MS Developer Studio will need the XP virtual mode (just thought I'd pass this on). 4. If an XP era application crashes on startup because of JAVA errors...I fixed mine by choosing the Windows 7 XP classic view (bypasses some JAVA).
This is a high end PC and is not cheap, so you would expect it to perform well. It does.
I found that I did not need to use XP virtual mode for anything and even Cubase Essential 4 from the XP era loaded and software validated (even the syncrosoft license did not stop me).
The computer is super fast and all my old software loaded. I give it thumbs up.

I don't like the shiny black plastic finish which shows dust and is easily scratched. The wireless mouse doesn't work well--I've had to put the USB receiver inches away to keep the mouse buttons functioning. The keyboard is too flat and has no Caps Lock indication--a real pain. Why not do what old typewriters did & have it click up and down? Dell doesn't offer a Firewire card (I have an expensive photo scanner that doesn't use anything else)--I had to buy one from a third-party and install it. Won't work on my aux drive, though I hear that's a Win 7 issue. Computer hardware is fine--no complaints, but Windows 7 is the worst operating system I've ever encountered. I've had terrible trouble loading older programs and the newer MS Office applications are far more difficult to use and crash a lot. Next time, I'm buying a Mac, mostly because of software issues.

XPS 8300, i3 processor

Review:
After my first startup I had no image on the brand new 24" monitor I had purchased with my new system, as it set itself to powersaving mode. I was using the VGA cable provided even though this is an HDMI compatible monitor. I had to keep shutting down and restarting the system until I decided to try an HDMI cable from my other device. And behold it started to work and I had a picture on my monitor ready to start my new installation setup, but after a few minutes the monitor shut down again. I rebooted the system and it did not work.
Somehow the pc was corrupted and windows would not start and even the restore partition was no good to boot from. Two days later after several installations of windows 7, my system was running as it should have been straight out of the box. I have made my own restore/backup since, although the system is very good when running correctly and also very quiet. My only main dissapointment is that I did purchase the I3 processor thinking it was a quad core chip (it is not, it is a dual core with four threads) My bad for not researching the product enough. although it is good and faster than my previous machine I do need to upgrade the processor to a quad core (I5 or I7).
So far so good, but Dell really need to make sure these systems are set up to work out of the box, as my problem lies with a VGA cable that does not work with this system, an HDMI cable needs to be provided even if the cost goes up a few pound. If I did not purchase the restore disc the system would have been sent back for testing and evaluation.
But overall this is a good base system for home use.

XPS 8300 - so far an excellent machine

Review:
I have the i7 2600 processor, 12 GB Ram, the GeForce 560 ti graphics board and 24" monitor. This is an excellent, high performance machine and so far plays any current game on the market without any problems.
The only problem I encountered was upon startup when I noticed the fan was very noisy. I opened up the case and found the plastic wrap still on the GeForce 560 ti card. Once I removed the plastic the fan was extremely quiet. To those of you who have 'noisy' units I would strongly recommend that you have a look inside the case and make sure there isn't plastic wrap left inside. The 8300 should be whisper quiet - it's not supposed to be noisy during operation.
To Dell - this is a very good product - don't spoil it by leaving the wrappers inside.

Review:
I have owned my 8300 about 3 weeks now and it is nothing short of fantastic. You should know I am a committed Dell fan, having purchased multiple Dell laptops for my daughters and for myself, as well as multiple Dell desktops for clients.
The Core i7 processor and 12 gb of memory make this the fastest computer I've ever owned. The video is fantastic (I'm using an HDMI cable to connect my 24 inch monitor to my pc), programs load screaming fast, and it's quiet as a sleeping baby. So far, it's the best computer I've ever owned and my job is IT tech support.
The only con I've run across so far is that the integrated Gigabit network card does not support jumbo frames. Jumbo frames is a relatively new networking scheme that allows larger packets of data to be sent over your network, therefore increasing your speed of data transfers between pc's on your network. I purchased a new Gigabit switch and Gigabit router that support jumbo frames, but my pc doesn't. I am very disappointed in this fact.

Review:
I purchased the XPS 8300 through the Dell Outlet. This is the third computer I have purchased over the years from the outlet, and as with past purchases, have not been disappointed. I was looking for a faster computer with greater memory and this XPS fits the bill. THe basic specs are: Intel i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz 8 gigs of RAM 1 TB hard drive AMD Radeon HD 6540 video card It came with a dual DVD Drive, one of which is Blu-Ray. A TV tuner is also installed although I currently am not using it. Other features such as a wireless network card are nice additions from my old system (an XPS 410).
When shopping the outlet, it is a bit hit and miss. Items come and go quickly, and sometimes the exact configuration desired is not included. However, with some patience, it is easy to eventualy find a system that meets your needs- and at a significantly discounted price. I like the fact that there are not a lot of bundled software programs already installed. Since I had a previous system in use, I simply used the Belkin transfer cable to move files across to the new computer.
Overall, very happy with this purchase. Should last me for some time to come. WHen the time comes to upgrade again, I will likley again check the Dell outlet first before deciding on a new purchase.
