Studio XPS 16 is the best I have owned

Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, video processing, gps navigation, document creation, media player

Review:
I was debating whether or not to buy a PC or a Mac to run Windows 7 (Which I prefer to Mac OSx). I really like the hardware that Mac uses. However, matching up side by side, I was able to get a more powerful laptop than the Mac Book Pro in the XPS 16. This also cost me $1,400 less. When I received the XPS 16 I was so surprised at how thin, sharp, and stylish the XPS 16 was. Then I installed Win 7 and WOW. This computer and OS is the quickest, smoothest, powerful laptop I have ever touched. Every piece of the laptop is high quality. The heat dissipation complaints are over rated. It does get hot when running on the "high performance" battery state and running several programs. However, this PC has plenty of power to run in the "balanced" state and stays comfortable on the lap. I encode Blu-ray DVD's without a hitch, the powerful processor does this task in decent time, best I've seen for a laptop. The screen is just the sickest thing since sliced cheese. All in all, I give this laptop my highest possible rating! (Studio XPS 16, 8Gb DDR3 Ram, 1Gb Dedicated Video, 3.06 Ghz dual core processor, 1920 x 1080 resolution, HDMI, dsplay port, serial ATA,and 3 USB ports to boot)

Studio XPS 16 Production damage?

Product Uses:
home use, photos, web

Review:
Pros
The screen lives up to expectations; it is very clear and bright. Colours are vivid and text is sharp. The speed of the system benefits from Windows 7 (64bit)
Cons
The XPS does not meet 'prestige' standards. The machine is sold on it's appearance and performance and I'm sorry to say the appearance is disappointing. I have had now had two machines and both have had the same problem; small indentations in the palm rest which must be from production methods. The damage, although slight, is in the shiny palm rest and the light reflection highlights the problem. The overall appearance is dreadful, particularly after about twenty minutes use when the fingerprints start to build. I won't be looking for another replacement as the turn-around time is arduosly long and support horrendous.

Review
Better sticking to a Studio and leave the XPS alone.

Studio XPS 16 - not good

Review:
Owned this machine almost one year - the monitor is really good color and good keyboard action.

The camera stopped working within 90 days and the DVD 8X drive hasn't worked in 6 months. Dell supoprt is right on par with that of Microsoft. I purchased their one-year software support but then it was determined to be hardware problem. I purchased the 3 year warrenty when I purchased this piece of junk but they still haven't fixed it - keep passing my around from department to department.

You would be better off buying a knock-off at Target.

There is little to fault in this laptop. Sleek and elegant looking, its monitor presents blu-ray so clearly and sharply that you feel the characters are actually present behing the screen. It has all the connectivity I think you could want. It handles picture editing, videos and 3-D design programs without any problems.
Nevertheless, I would have liked it to be a little lighter, and thought the price was a bit high.

Review:
I've had my XPS 16 now for almost a month. So far I love it! There are some defaults but overall it’s great!
Pros:
Love the backlit keyboard and that it dims after not being used for a while
The screen is great with high resolution and amazing graphics
The speakers are great although in a little weird of a location
Cons:
The screen flips back and covers the exhaust port for the cooling FAN
There isn’t an easy off for the touchpad, I use a Bluetooth mouse
The lights on the hinges stay on while charging, not sure if there is a way to shut that off
The bottom gets very hot; I’d recommend purchasing a cooling plate with fans

Overall I am extremely happy with the Studio XPS 16! I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a above average laptop that you can do almost anything on.

Studio XPS 16 - One of the Greats

Product Uses:
software development, streaming video, virtual machines

Review:
This is by far the best laptop I have ever owned, and I have owned 2 previous Dells, a Toshiba, and an Asus.

I loaded mine to the rim with a 250GB solid state harddrive, 8GB Memory, Intel i7, and the 16" RGB-LED display.

PROS:
Solid State Harddrive is the most valuable upgrade you can make. It means you laptop will not make any noise unless your processor heavy and the fan turns on, which is already whisper quiet. Solid state harddrive also means your Windows 7 will boot in under 8 seconds due to increased very fast read times. Screen is absolutely amazing, I read many reviews that the white is not as white as other screens due to the RGB LEDs instead of White LEDs, and possibly it is a little darker but the color is of such higher quality that its not even something to consider - RGB LEDs rock. Keyboard is very soft to the touch and lights up when you start typing. Also lighter than my previous Dell XPS 1530. Super fast with 8GB and i7 processor, I run 4 virtual machines (host Windows 7 with 3GB, 2 Windows 7 VMs with 2GB each, 2 XP VMs with 500MB each). The simple DellDock app is a cool little touch. Styling/look is right on, I wouldn't change a thing.

CONS:
I miss the fingerprint reader which is not available anymore - it was cool.
Keyboard occasionally squeakes when typing (although very quietly). Sales guy told me that a HDMI cable would come with it but it did not - you need to buy this separately. Warrantly does not cover accidental dropping and spills - although the warrantly image used to advertise the warranty shows it being dropped and coffee spilling on it, this is very misleading for potential buyers. It also took 5 weeks to deliver! Incredibly slow delivery times.

Studio XPS 16 - Great Laptop, Poor Sound

Product Uses:
teaching, presentations, personal use

Review:
I upgraded from a 4 year-old XPS M140 and am very pleased with the laptop; the RGBLED screen was definitely worth the extra price, the functionality of Windows 7 is impressive and the new style keyboard is very comfortable and fast to type with. The exception to this great package are the speakers, which are some of the worst sounding laptop speakers I've heard. My 4 YO laptop sounded much, much better and I was satisfied to use it as a stand-alone music player when I traveled or just around the house. Unfortunately, it is not so with the XPS 16 since the sound is muddy and the range of the speakers is minimal. The glossy finish is beautiful but you will be wiping it down daily (especially in black) if you're a Type-A like I am.
I'd definitely recommend this laptop but wish Dell hadn't put the cheapest sounding speakers in this attractive and very functional laptop.

My experience with Dell has been very good until I decided to get this laptop. Now, I am not saying the laptop in general is bad, I am saying that the circumstances surrounding the use of it have been not too good. I received my laptop, and it was perfect for about a few weeks until I noticed that the chrome trim surrounding XPS light ring was starting to peel off. I didn't care much about this, until the plastic guard covering the right speaker started to peel off as well. After this, I decided that it was time to get a replacement because the build quality seemed very poor. However after I received my replacement, I was very pleased with it once again :)

3 Month User - Dell Studio XPS 16

Product Uses:
Connecting with Friends, university

Review:
Even though it has some very minor problems, this is the best laptop I have owned so far.

Here are my specs:
- Intel P8700 @ 2.53 GHz (64-bit)
- Not HD screen - 1366x768
- 4GB RAM

Pros:
- Much cheaper than the MacBook Pro but comparable
- Very nice design
- Backlit keyboard is pretty cool and you don't get tired :)
- Pretty fast. With Windows Vista and Windows 7 it runs very smoothly!
- The touch buttons are cool
- OK battery life with the specs I have (mine lasts about 3 1/2 hours)
- fits on my normal sized backpack
- nice resolution web-cam (2 MP)

Cons:
- A lot of Dell software
- The trackpad is not ideal - it's easy to touch the trackpad when you are clicking on the buttons and that throws the mouse pointer off
- Once or twice a day I get a crackling noise on the speakers for like 2 seconds. No clue what that is.
- Easy to leave finger prints on the cover, which makes it look not too good. It looks great when it's clean though.

I bought this system to replace my old acer travelmate 1641 "1.6ghz 2gb memory, onboard graphics as it no longer can play alot of games due to graphics limitations. wasn't expecting to much from my new system till I got it. Amazing preformance the vista user score almost matches that of my desktop system of which I use for everything from video editing to playing alot of games on. Now I can take my games and video editing on the road with me and not have to wait till I get home from a long trip to edit or have some fun.

I haven't had any issues myself with the system getting hot "system build"

intel core 2 duo p8600 2.4ghz 3mb cache.
4gb ddr3 1067mhz
320gb 7200rpm hdd
8x dvd burner
15.6" 1920x1080 wled hd display

I already had a laptop cooler for my previous system "didn't use it the 1st week I had my new system" and do use it on the new system to help "prevent" heat issues from arising.

"when making an investment on anything the best method is to help prevent not wait till it's too late"

Love, Love, Love My Studio XPS 16!

Review:
The pros for this system are just about everything. The cons for me is that I don't like Vista and the system runs on the hot side.

I have had my Studio XPS 16 (in black) for 5 months now. Not only is it gorgeous in its design, but the RGBLED 1920x1080 display is to die for. I couldn't use any other display ever again. The lighted keyboard is a plus. Once you have this feature, you won't know how you ever worked without it.
I use my computer for everything from email to web research to word processing to graphics editing to music/video, to creating brochures and newsletters. And it is relatively light in weight for its size so it's easy to take with you from room to room or outside or on the road.
Just an interesting tidbit: This very computer is featured on ABC daytime TV! For those of you who watch General Hospital, you will see this computer on the desk of Jasper "Jax" Jacks in his office at the Metro Court. This system's design is very distinctive and you can't miss is.
I would recommend this computer highly.

I cannot imagine a better laptop out there in this price range, but I bet there isn't a better laptop in higher price ranges. My only "wish list" is that Dell make the Bluetooth mouse set up instructions more accurate and that they load all the updates for Vista before they send me the computer because that took 20 minutes, which felt like an eternity, but hey, I was anxious to get to my online games. Studio XPS 16 Rules

Review:
I've been occupationally involved with Wintel computers for over 20 years, and I have to say that the Dell Studio XPS 16 is the best I've ever seen. I bought it for my wife for her independent consulting business and she (and I) couldn't be happier.

There's not much I can say that hasn't already been mentioned in prior reviews, except I did notice there that the vast majority of reviewers experiencing power consumption issues have the 1080P screen. I configured my wife's SXPS16 with the 720P resolution (which is absolutely perfect in every respect, with no need to adjust font size or DPI settings) and the 2nd-gen 256GB SSD, and the 9-cell battery easily lasts her 4.5 to 5 hours at full screen brightness (3 to 3.5 hours on the 6-cell). Also, she noted yesterday that she's had no heating issues at all; however, that may be because the 9-cell elevates the chassis off the surface and the unit also usually sits on a Logitech cooling pad. And yes, the battery life I indicated is with the cooling pad running off the USB port.

All in all, the SXPS16 is an outstanding machine for the price that appears to be improved by _not_ purchasing the effectively needless 1080P screen upgrade. On the other hand, the 2nd-gen 256GB SSD is a beast that rips through file operations in a blink, and it's an upgrade I would totally recommend to moderate and power users alike.
