Title:
Dell M11x ..something wierd about that i7?
Review:
I sprang for the core i7 model and was a little shocked that this is only a DUAL CORE i7 w/HT for 4 virtual processors not the 8 like i was expecting. Did research and it is correct. Even though, it still is about on par with my AMD quad core/nvidia 250 desktop. But hey, I also have an atom 330 dual core/ht ION netbook and this trounces that. I scored 7000 w/3dmark06 with a mild overclock. All in an almost netbook sized form. Build quality is AWSOME.

Title:
Dell thought of everything! The M11x is AWESOME!
Product Uses:
internet, video, Gaming, desktop publishing
Review:
This is my first experience with Alienware and I have to say that I'm highly impressed. I own many Dell products, and while they're all good, I wouldn't say that any of them are out of the ordinary. That is until I owned the Alienware M11x.
The first thing I noticed when turning it on was that there was nothing installed on the machine that I wouldn't want. No bloat ware, no anti-virus, nothing that I'd have to uninstall.
I bought the machine primarily as a "netbook" for my wife, but being an avid gamer, I wanted something that could also be used at LAN parties and such. We also bought an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc... as we weren't sure that we'd like the 11.6" display for every day use. Much to our surprise the 11.6" display seems larger then we expected and it is the crispest image I've ever seen. There are a number of reviews that might slightly complain about the reflective nature of the display, I was of the same opinion for about 20 minutes. I think the "glass like" display enhances the image even more, and it only takes a few minutes to position yourself so that it doesn't reflect over and above the image.
The laptop's outer shell is very well constructed, with everything placed exactly where I would put it. With powered USB ports (powered even when the computer is off) a battery charge indicator (also available when the computer is off) and lots of pretty lights, I couldn't ask for more.
I'm one that likes lights on a computer, but was a little wary of these before getting the computer. It seemed like there might be too many. But again I was wrong. The lighting is really cool. With 5 configurable zones, not only configurable to be one color, but you can even set it up to rotate through all, not sure how many, but like 20 colors. They can be set to be constant, morphing, flashing, all 5 zones independent of each other. And then you can also set different colors in each zone depending on the application that is running. So if I don't want the wife or kids running something, I set all the zones to flashing red and they get the message instantly :)
The keyboard and touch pad are nice as well. Someone mentioned that the keyboard was a little childish. I'd' have to disagree and say that's it's just Alienware style. Fun and not too over the top, just enough...
Last but not least, the performance is phenomenal! It ran all of the Call of Duties we play just as we would expect them to on our desktop PCs. The 7300u process also over-clocks quite well. Switching between the graphics cards was very easy, and batter life far exceeded our expectations utilizing either card. And unlike other laptops I have, it stayed quite cool, even after hours of gaming.
Well, I could go on and on about this laptop, but I think you get the picture. I'd give it 5 stars and recommend the purchase to ANYONE, even if you're not looking for a gaming machine. It's just AWESOME.

Title:
My First Dell
Product Uses:
streaming video, photoshop, web tools
Review:
I was impressed by the specs of the machine and its looks. Went down to the local dell(not reseller). Was at first disappointed because I cannot get the customized plate. The free tact mouse sort of made up for it. Good I am not much of a gamer. My 14 year old cannot keep his hands off it. So I guess he must be enjoying it. It handled streaming video rather better than my previous machine. All my other productivity software like photoshop and office ran well. No problems with multitasking so far. Bad The audio is terrible. I cannot get a decent enough volume on any movie or game I played. My son was on headphones all the time. The bluetooth is also bad. Have to reset my mouse at intervals.
Have not regretted buying the machine so far. What was supposed to be a 2-3 week wait lasted only a week.

Title:
Decent hardware, beware Dell installed software
Product Uses:
multimedia, Gaming
Review:
The computer itself works as advertised, though to cooling system (specifically the thermal paste) is sub-standard and the laptop will commonly run too hot without some type of external cooling support (e.g., raised platform with fans). My biggest complaint (and it's a big one) is that the Alienware software that controls the themes on the laptop utilizes a piece of software called WindowBlinds which crashes Internet Explorer 9/Firefox 4 randomly and also screws up the display of those web browsers. Yes, I'm aware that Chrome is a great browser, however many sites are still optimized for Explorer/Firefox that don't work correctly on Chrome. Dell's level of service in regards to helping me correct a piece of software, that Dell installed, consisted of "you don't have the additional software warranty, go away". The level of support on this issues was so poor that I'll not be buying a Dell product again. I gave the laptop 2 stars because it does work, however any company that installs custom software on their machines and then doesn't support said software is one that I will avoid in the future.

Title:
Another chinsy Dell Laptop
Review:
I've been using Dell computers since the 1990s. That's back before they outsourced their customer support to India. Since that time, I've watched Dell march down a road of decreasing product quality in response to consumer demands for lowest-cost computers.
The Alienware M11x is no exception. Like my last laptop from Dell (XPS Gen2), the monitor hinge has broken due to the plastic on metal connection used at this joint.
Performance is also sub-par. Don't listen to the hype from all the Dell fanbois out there telling you how their M11x runs 100FPS in all their games. While this machine may very well do so, that typically only happens when staring at the ground in a first-person shooter. Seriously, this thing doesn't play any of the games released in the same generation in which it came out well, even at its native 1366x768 resolution.
Heat dissipation is also a major issue for this machine. Even when brand-new and using integrated graphics, the bottom reaches a level of heat uncomfortable to sit with in your lap. Turn on the discrete 3D card, add a pile of dust in the heat sink and you have a nice little space heater. BTW, the heat sink requires you to take the majority of the base apart in order to access and clean.
This is definitely my last Dell, at least for awhile. Will be trying out some of the other manufacturers to see if they have better solved any of these problems.
