Hard to use, awkward mouse pad / keyboard config
Product Uses:
net surfing
Review:
The keyboard and mouse pad setup is terrible. The mouse pad is directly below + 1/2 inch to the right of the "N" key. This means that my palm drags across the mouse pad while typing. I have had to glue pads 1/3" in depth around the mouse pad to keep my palm clear of the pad.
The function keys have be flipped. To use the F5 key for example one must hold down the Fn key and hit F5. This is inconvient.
Because of these limitations my wife and I find that this computer is only good for minor tasks like surfing. Trying to do any real work leads to a desire to throw the machine across the room.
On the upside, it is fast, quiet and light.

Why no fast hard disk?
Product Uses:
Travel, Music & Movies
Review:
I don't have one yet and here is why: Why is it that it seems nearly impossible to get the 320GB _7200RPM_ harddrive? I want to configure a high performance system but only the _slower_ 500GB drive is availble (without going $$ solid state drive). The 320GB drive is a _lower cost_ hard drive on lower performance systems, but any high performance configuration that includes that costs more than the same configuration with the more expensive 500GB drive. 320GB is more than enough storage, but 5400RPM is too slow for the 500GB. The only way to get that is to start with a lower performance system and configure high performance options that somehow ends up more expensive than starting with a high performance system but ending up with the more expensive slower harddrive.??
Lack of a cost effective 7200RPM hard drive in a high performance system is a major oversight.

I like the PC, especially the size. The only negative I have is the size and the function of the touchpad. I have big fingers and have a hard time keeping the cursor in the right position. Dell should have designed separate left and right mouse buttons. Incorporating these buttons in the touch pad causes the cursor to move to the wrong selection when clicking.

No built-in microphone or hard drive activity LED
Review:
I bought an Inspiron 1545. Overall it's a good laptop for the price. I was surprised, however, that it did not come with a built-in microphone -- that seems to come only with the webcam option, which I didn't choose.
Another surprise was the lack of a LED to indicate hard drive activity. I like to know whether the drive is busy when a laptop goes in or out of hibernation, for example.
The power jack on the laptop is next to two USB ports, and gets in the way for some USB devices.
Then there's some QA issue. I chose the Inspiron 15 because of the option of a 1600x900 screen. I was happy with the screen until I noticed some smudge marks *under* the screen (i.e. under the plastic film of the LCD). They were visible only under low light conditions, with the laptop on. Dell is fixing it under warranty.

Excellent machine - hard drive partitions unusual.
Product Uses:
home office
Review:
Good machine but beware some of the web reports on how to fix the hard drive partition issue.
The 500GB drive is partioned into 2 hidden partions, plus the C drive (80Gb) with the Windows 7 OS and an empty D drive for the rest of the data. I did not find this a very slick process and wanted all data and operating system on one C drive. This also allows the Windows Easy Transfer to move the data easily from an old PC.
Some forum reports suggest that to fix you need to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows. This was even the initial advise from Dell email support who offered a 2 hours slot to guide the process. THIS IS NOT NEEDED. The partition problem can be easily fixed using the the disk management utility. You simply delete the D partition (move any data first) and add the free space to C:
Full details in this forum:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19330287.aspx
Posted by DELL-Chris M replied on 21 May 2010 3:27 PM
Option 1 Keep both partitions and move your stuff to the Data D drive
* Remove any applications you installed from the OS partition C drive
* Reinstall them onto the Data D drive. You have to manually change the path from C:\Program Files to D:\whatever
* All MP3s and Videos should be moved and in the future saved to the Data D drive
* Redirect your My Documents to the Data D drive
- Press Windows E to start up Windows Explorer
- Right-click the My Documents folder
- Select Properties from the menu
- The Target Folder Location displays the current location of the My Documents folder. If you click on the Move button below you may select a new folder or hard drive and move the contents of the MyDocuments folder there
Option 2
Delete the Data D drive and create one large OS partition C drive
This process is destructive to the Data D drive partition (NOT the OS partition C). All data there should be copied to another drive (C or an external one). The data on the OS partition C will not be harmed through this process.
* Open Computer Management. This is done by right clicking on Computer on the Start Menu and choosing Manage (this will prompt for elevation – click yes on the box that pops up)
* Go to Disk Management on the left side pane of the Computer Management window and click on it
* Right click on the data partition (NOT the OS partition C). The data partition will be identifiable since it will most likely be surrounded by a green box
* Choose Delete Volume from the menu to remove the volume
* click Yes
* At this point, right click on the Free Space (bright green) box
* From the menu that appeared, choose Delete Partition
* click Yes
* Right click on the OS C partition
* Choose Extend Volume
* Click Next on the Extend Volume Wizard
* Click Next
* Click Finish. The OS C partition now consumes the rest of the drive. You should see Healthy OEM partition, RECOVERY, OC (C:)

Dell's customer service is great and this model would be great because it's so small and streams video really well. However, my hard drive has crashed twice. Blue screen of death, then it crashed. No reboot. The first time dell replaced the hard drive, the second time they replaced both hard drive and motherboard. Looks like they need to work out some bugs on this model, because I've read another reviewer with similar problems.

Hard drive not connected, awful customer service!
Product Uses:

Review:
The machine I purchased was the Core i-7, with 12Gb of RAM and 1Tb hard drive. The performance is good, but is let down by slow disk data transfer rate in Windows 7 (rated 5.9, whereas all the other areas are 7.5 x 2 and 7.1 x 2). This means the performance is not as good as it could be.
The main problem I had was the computer arrived and didn't work. As I work in IT, I opened it up and found the hard drive was not connected! The cable was neatly rolled-up and tucked behind some other cables, nowhere near the hard drive connector. Once I connected it up, I have had no problems, but after telephoning, emailing and snail-mailing DELL, I have heard nothing. As a result, I will not be buying anything from DELL again. All I wanted was an apology, but they were not polite enough to do that, so they lose my custom.

Unfortunately, what was a wonderful, fast, great laptop went to a doorstop in three months. It was a sudden, catastrophic hard drive failure with no data recovery. Dell sent a new hard drive and recovery discs, but no directions. All originally pre-loaded software was not part of the recovery discs, so I'm working on a bare bones computer trying to gather all of the software myself. The best bang for your hard earned buck!
Product Uses:
Gaming, general awesomeness, online hd videos
Review:
For many years I've custom built my own rig and upgraded as needed. My last computer was an AMD based GeForce 8800 in SLI configuration. It was time to upgrade! Mostly for online gaming, so I was looking for an exclusive gaming powerhouse that was comparable in cost to building my own and not too extravagant...we're all on a budget, right? Also, for DirectX 11 compatibility.
I shopped online for 6 months and circled back to Dell every time. After comparing configurations of the different Aurora's I finally settled on an Aurora with an i7 920 processor, 6GB of 1333MHz RAM and a single GeForce GTX 460 graphics card with intents to add a second card later as needed. I also added a 22 inch Alienware monitor after shopping around other sites and decided the best value was again with Dell.
My order arrived in record time! It only took 3 or 4 days, I didn't receive an email notifying that it had been sent, in fact, I was still under the assumption that it was being built. It was such a surprise when the UPS guy knocked on the door with my HUGE delivery! It truly is massive, be warned. But very well packaged, I was worried about the shipping of delicate electronics but it fired up fine right out of the box. It starts up pretty loudly since all the fans are going but it quickly quiets down and runs on the water cooling with minimal fans.
The games I play are LOTRO, WoW, FF14, Civ 4 and a few non-graphical demanding games like Diablo II. The only game that there is even a hint of a stutter with is FF14 but that game is arguably a coding mess and doesn't use your rig's resources like it should anyway so I don't pay attention to that too much. It's still beautiful though! Just a bit choppy in towns, but since no one plays that game anyway you may not care :)
It's not cheap though. I have a Dell preferred account so I was able to get the 12 months with no interest deal - which does takes a bit of the sting out. But if you spend a lot of your free time online or gaming, you really should think about upgrading to an i7 processor and DirectX 11 compatible card.
So, in conclusion. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. If you are financially sound enough to consider a new computer purchase soon I would definitely recommend an Alienware Aurora.

Warning: hard drive difficult to replace
Review:
I purchased the Inspiron 15R thinking I could easily upgrade it to 8GB ram and a 7,200rpm hard drive. The ram was easy, but I quickly realized that the hard drive is buried inside the chassis and is extremely difficult to access. The instructions were hard to track down because Dell lists this model under a different name when browsing manuals. Here they are:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insM5010/en/sm/hdd.htm#wp1187790
I was also told by a dell tech on chat that the hard drive is only supposed to be replaced by a licensed dell technician. I've always been able to replace the hard drive in laptops I've owned, so this is extremely disappointing from Dell and had I purchased the laptop for myself, I probably would be returning it right now.
So make sure before you buy that you definitely won't *ever* have the need to upgrade your hard drive. (In other words, just stay away from this model!)

OK Laptop, Hard Drive Difficult to Replace
Review:
I've had literally hundreds of Dell laptops pass through my hands. This was ordered for a friend and honestly I was disappointed to see that the Hard Drive cannot be replaced by the average user. It requires the removal of the keyboard (pulling a screw from the bottom and finding the tabs), the top laptop palmrest, all the screws on the bottom... making sure you don't rip the small connectors for both... Hard drive replacement on this model is not for the average person. If you've had almost any other laptop you know usually the laptop is just 2 or 3 screws and it pulls out of the bottom. Not on this model. If you're going to upgrade to a SSD or simply replace that broken drive BE AWARE.
All laptop drives and batteries wear out and changing them should be as easy as getting new tires on your car. But on this model it isn't.
One star might be a little harsh. It is otherwise a descent laptop but I'll never repurchase this model. I really like my other Dell laptops but if this is their new design direction I'll have to watch more closely. If you already ordered this model and have a friend that can pull the thing apart if it breaks, don't worry just keep it, it'll be fine. But if you're trying to decide if you want it I'd look at a different Dell model unless you know how to take laptops apart.

Review:
Sure, this is a nice computer, when it works. Two months after purchasing, and after relatively light use, the hard drive crashed. Dell replaced the drive for free, but I had to reinstall all my programs and pay another professional to try to tease my data from my damaged drive, which Dell insisted I return within a few days.
That second hard drive just crashed, almost one month after the second one was replaced. Give me a break! Once again, I'm waiting for Dell to replace the drive, so I can begin the process of reinstalling everything and hopefully figuring out how to save my data.
The service person from India told me it must be my software, but it's just the Windows office suite and the software that came with the computer.

I do enjoy a good computer game every now and then. I wasn't looking for a "gaming" computer. I wanted something a little bigger than a netbook, more powerful than a netbook, but small enough to carry easily just about anywhere. I tried the tablet route--which left me wanting computer features. I actually kinda stumbled across this on the Dell site. Read all the reviews. Read reviews on the Internet. Kicked it around for a few days, and then hit the "order" key. I am so pleased with this little guy. He does everything I ask of him in a speedy manner. He's awesome in class (a couple of graduate classes), at school working on lesson plans (I teach), and for all-around "fun" when I'm at home or relaxing at the corner frappe house. And he is wonderfully mobile. (I personify--and name--all my "toys," hence the "he" instead of "it.") If you're looking for portability, dependability, and an "awesome/wow" factor, you just can't go wrong with this lil' guy.

Nice Little Box, But Hard To Add After-Market WiFi
Product Uses:

Review:
This is a nice little box, especially for the price.
One caveat is that I thought I'd save some money by ordering the model without WiFi, figuring out I could add it on my own later. I found out after I received the PC that there are no wires within the PC to connect to an after-market card, so I ended up buying a USB WiFi adapter, which works fair, but I was disappointed that ordering without WiFi really means WITHOUT WiFi.
Also, I didn't receive a CD/DVD for Windows 7 - rather it was installed on a partition on the PC. I prefer to have a physical CD/DVD also, in case I wish to reformat the drive, install other OSes, etc.
I plan to run Ubuntu Server on it, which I think will work out well.
I would recommend this PC to anyone looking for a reasonably priced small form factor PC with good specs.

The 4th drive has just failed. I have spent weeks of my life on the end of helpline phones & re-installing software & data. Although this machine is out of warranty it is clearly not fit for purpose. I have pointed this out to Dell up to manager level. He is on record as saying that 4 replacement hard discs in 2 years can be regarded as "fit for purpose". This machine cost a great deal of money 2 years ago and I have no intention of throwing good money & time after bad. I can't even re-use the monitor! This computer doesn't have the build quality and high quality design compared to the competition, the HP Envy series and Apple Macbook Pro line. It's thick and the design is outdated. If you're purchasing a high end laptop, don't you think the design should be equally important. On paper, the components are fantastic at a great price. However, it is annoying to carry around due to the bulky form factor. I have had a variety of issues with this laptop from the screen to the hot, loud fan that still hasn't been resolved.
